A coupling unit couples the user terminal to the transmission medium in accordance with information from the server. Likewise, the server is controlled in accordance with information from the user terminal. In this manner, communication is created and performed between the server and the user terminal. The user terminal may be a Set-Top Unit which may be adjusted to the transmission medium by, for example, a physical medium converter or the communication itself between the Set-Top Unit and the server may be adjusted as directed by programs installed in the Set-Top Unit which may originate from the server.

摘要： A system for serving information is provided comprising a router, a storage medium unit connected to the router, a plurality of end devices connected to the router for reproducing of information, wherein the end devices output demand data requesting a selected portion of information data, and a managing unit connected to the router for managing distribution of the information data. The managing unit outputs distribution control data including channel information of the selected portion of the information data. The managing unit further outputs a predetermined software program to the storage medium unit and one of the plurality of end devices outputting the demand data to control subsequent operation of the storage medium unit and the one of said plurality of end devices, and the transmission of data therebetween. The storage medium unit outputs selected information data with routing information in the form of one or more packets according to the distribution control data. The router comprises a table wherein data representing a relation between the routing information between the storage medium unit and the routing information of the end devices is stored. Selected information data is output with second routing information in the form of one or more packets according to the distribution control data and the predetermined software program, wherein the managing unit updates the content of the table when one of the storage medium units malfunctions.

The second storage medium unit is assigned to one of the end devices which requires a first operation mode under the control of the system manager; and the first storage medium unit is assigned to the remaining end devices which require a second operation mode under the control of the system manager.
