摘要: A fairing for an aircraft is provided, having a roll axis with a turret coupled to the front end of the fairing for rotation about the roll axis. An opening is formed through the front end of the turret in which a tracking member is supported for rotation between forward and rearward positions about a pitch axis transverse to the roll axis. The tracking member has a cavity with a primary optical mirror at one end and a transparent shield at an opposite end with a primary optical axis extending between the mirror and shield. The shield is slanted to minimize wind turbulence when the tracking member is located in a rearward position.

摘要: A method and system of image modulation detection of an aircraft exhaust plume by time sequence differentiation is provided. The method comprises the steps of forming two sequential images of the field of view in which an exhaust plume to be detected is located, and forming a differential image from the sequential images showing components of the aircraft's exhaust plume that are modulating at a rate greater than the frame rate of the detection system. The nonmodulating components such as the sky hills, and even the missile body are eliminated from the differential image. Only the plume remains and only the plume is detected. Therefore there is not false alarm note. Each image is formed by a plurality of pixels, wherein each pixel images a portion of the field of view. A value is assigned to each pixel in each of the sequential images that corresponds to one or more characteristics of the pixel. The value of each pixel in one sequential image is subtracted from the value of the corresponding pixel in the other sequential image to produce a value for a resultant pixel. The differential image is formed by imaging the resultant pixels that have a non-zero value, wherein the differential image shows components of the aircraft's exhaust plume that are modulating at a rate greater than the frame rate of the detection system.

摘要: The invention is a radar absorbing material and a process for making same. In detail, the invention includes a binder material containing a mixture of two groups of spheres made of a magnetic material, The first group of spheres have an average diameter and the second group have an average diameter generally 0.73 times the average diameter of the spheres of the first group. The first and second group contain generally equal numbers of spheres. The amount of the binder material incorporated is sufficient to both bind mixture together while maintaining the individual spheres separated from each other. The process involves the steps of: providing a first group of spheres made of a magnetic material; providing a second group of spheres made of a magnetic material containing a number of spheres equal to the number of spheres of the first group with an average diameter of generally 0.73 times the average diameter of the first group of spheres; mixing the first and second groups of spheres together; and adding an amount of the binder material sufficient to both bind the mixture together while maintaining the individual spheres separated from each other.

摘要: A detection system will detect targets against a fixed background if the target is of a type emitting a gaseous plume. The detection system directs electromagnetic energy, preferably radio frequency signals, toward the fixed background in an area of suspected target activity. The detection system has a receiver which detects reflected electromagnetic energy from the fixed background. The system will identify anomalous variations in range. The variations occur as a result of refraction of the electromagnetic energy wave passing through the gaseous exhaust stream. This indicates a probable target which is creating exhaust plume.

In detail, the propulsion system includes a thrust producing assembly rotatably mounted on the vehicle, the assembly rotatable about an axis of rotation in a plane at an acute angle to the vertical axis of the vehicle, the assembly rotatable in the plane from a position wherein the thrust axis of the assembly is aligned with the longitudinal axis to a position at least plus or minus ninety degrees thereto. A powerplant assembly is coupled to the thrust producing assembly to provide power thereto. The powerplant assembly includes a fuel efficient powerplant assembly mounted within the vehicle having sufficient power for cruise conditions, the fuel efficient powerplant having a output drive shaft coupled to the thrust producing assembly. A light weight, high power powerplant assembly is mounted directly to the thrust producing assembly having sufficient power for docking conditions. A first clutch is provided for de-coupling the fuel efficient powerplant from the thrust producing assembly and a second clutch means for decoupling the light weight, high power powerplant from the thrust producing assembly. An actuation system is provided for rotating the thrust producing assembly about the axis of rotation.

摘要: A dimensionally graded electroconductive and electromagnetically responsive composite material is produced by contacting a polyurethane open cell foam substrate with a solution of an oxidatively polymerizable compound, such as pyrrole, that is polymerized to form a thin electroconductive polymer coating on the foam's surfaces. The reaction, wherein the compound is oxidized and polymerized to form a conductive polymer occurs over time. By varying the amount of time the porous foam substrate is in contact with the reacting solution a graded amount of electroconductive polymer is deposited on the foam substrate. The electrical activity of the resultant electrically conducting polyurethane/polypyrrole composite foam is measured as a Free Field Transmission loss at the microwave frequency of 10 GHz and expressed in "-dB". The polyurethane/polypyrrole composite foam with dimensionally graded electrical conductivity/activity constitutes a new bulk absorber.

摘要: A detection system will detect and identify self-propelled objects, such as missiles, which create a hot exhaust plume. The exhaust plume has radiation which modulates with a frequency range of interest. This frequency range can be detected with various detectors, such as an infrared detector, an ultraviolet detector, or even a radio frequency detector. Guided missiles have radiation frequencies which are much higher than the radiation frequencies of jet aircraft and of reciprocating engines. A filter will filter the output signals from the detector, and discard those outside of the frequency range of interest. A warning signal will indicate if frequencies are encountered within the frequency range of interest.
