Abstract:
A universal tape applying apparatus for applying tape to both sides of a butt joint formed in a running web and between a new web and an expiring web. The apparatus includes a top tape applying roll assembly and a bottom tape applying roll assembly, each roll assembly having a tape roll in the form of a cylinder with a flat side or section on its outer periphery and a tape carrier spirally mounted on the remaining portion of the outer periphery of the tape roll at an angle conforming to the angle of the butt joint splice. The tape rolls are accelerated to the speed of the running web by air cylinders which are preloaded and pressurized to provide a thrust (torque) force to thereby accelerate the tape rolls to the speed of the running web. The air cylinder for the top tape roll is released on a given signal to provide a thrust force to the top tape roll through a pawl and ratchet assembly. Release of the air cylinder for the bottom tape roll is synchronized with the movement of the top tape roll through a mechanical linkage to provide a thrust force through a ratchet and pawl assembly.
Abstract:
An electropneumatic transducer having a pneumatic pressure regulator operatively controlled by a solenoid, an adjustable spring biasing assembly connected to the regulator and solenoid to maintain the moving parts of the transducer in a normally closed position and to minimize vibratory motion induced in the moving parts. A diaphragm arrangement is connected to respond to the output pressure of the regulator to introduce an additional force to the force of the solenoid. The inherent friction of the solenoid is reduced by a linear bearing arrangement. A pneumatic web tensioning system utilizing such an electropneumatic transducer.
Abstract:
An assembly for holding a doctor blade in adjustable position with respect to the printing cylinder. An air loaded clamping device locks the doctor blade firmly in operative position in its holder and when the doctor blade is to be removed, the air load can be relieved and the doctor blade and its mounting quickly and easily withdrawn in an endwise direction from the printing equipment without disturbing any of the other printing equipment. The adjustment also includes an air load device for urging the doctor blade against the cylinder with a predetermined amount of pressure; this biasing of the blade into proper engagement with the cylinder is made by the air loaded device and through an adjustable gear; the adjustable gear in turn, can be adjusted initially to make the proper preliminary adjustment of the blade relative to the printing cylinder.
