POLYURETHANES CONTAINING ISOCYANATE GROUPS ARE REACTED WITH GLYCIDOL TO PREPARE GLYCIDOL-MODIFIED POLYURETHANES USEFUL FOR APPLICATION TO TEXTILE MATERIALS TO IMPROVE THEIR PROPERTIES, E.G., TO IMPART SHRINK RESISTANCE. TYPICAL EXAMPLE: A POLYETHER POLYURETHANE CONTAINING FREE NCO GROUPS IS REACTED WITH GLYCIDOL TO YIELD A GLYCIDOL-MODIFIED POLYMER WHICH IS FORMED INTO AN EMULSION AND APPLIED TO A TEXTILE MATERIAL. THE TREATED TEXTILE MAY BE DIRECTLY CURED OR THE CURING OPERATION MAY BE DELAYED UNTIL THE FABRIC IS MANUFACTURED INTO A FINISHED GARMENT.

FLUORINATED ALCOHOLATES ARE PREPARED BY REACTING A FLUORO-KETONE WITH AN ALKALI METAL FLUORIDE. THE ALCOHOLATES MAY BE REACTED WITH ACYL HALIDES TO PRODUCE ESTERS USEFUL FOR ENHANCING THE WATER- AND OIL-REPELLENCY OF TEXTILES.

Novel fluoroalkyl ethers, typically (CF3)2CF-O-CH2-CH2-Br, are prepared by reacting a ketone with an alkali metal fluoride, then reacting the resulting intermediate with a dihaloethane. These ethers may be dehydrohalogenated by reaction with alcoholic KOH to yield the corresponding fluoroalkyl vinyl ethers, e.g., (CF3)2CF-O-CH=CH2. The vinyl derivatives are useful for providing oil- and water-repellent coatings on fibrous materials, e.g., fabrics.

Soil-repellent and soil-release properties are imparted to fibrous materials by depositing on them terpolymers of fluoroalkyl allyl (or methallyl) ethers and maleic anhydride, and then curing the treated material at 50*-150* C.
