Abstract:
This invention is related to a die set and method for the production of multiple stripes with two different materials A and B adjacent to each other. The special feature of this invention is that a specially designed shim is inserted between two pieces of coating dies. When liquids A and B enter the two sides of the die set separately, B liquid will flow through the distribution passages in the shim to form multiple stripes and then contact stripes of A liquid in the same slot section. The multiple stripes of repeated coating liquids that consists of ABAB patterns will be generated once the multiple stripes are coated and dried on the substrate.
Abstract:
The invention is related to the formation of three different and repeated stripes abbreviate as ABCABC-typed or A_B_C-typed at the die exit. The symbol, “_”, implies that there is no coating between two adjacent stripes. In this invention a guide shim and a guide die are inserted between two coating dies. Three different coating solutions will flow into the die assembly through different inlet positions. Two of which are introduced from the two coating dies will flow through the multiple channels provided in the guide shim and the guide die respectively and then contact with each other and with the third solution introduced from a side of the guide die in the same slot section to form the ABCABC-typed stripes. The coating solutions can also flow through the multiple channels to the same slot section but not contact each other to form the A_B_C-typed stripes at the die exit with a modification of the die assembly.

The present invention discloses an apparatus for block type extrusion coating, and a process for forming block coating or grid-type coating on a substrate. The present invention uses a die set composed of an upper mold, a lower mold and a shim therebetween, which can be used to form a plurality of coated stripes. The present invention further uses several control valves, pumps and a controller to intermittently extrude a coating solution from the die set, so that the stripe coating is converted to a block coating. The block coated substrate can be rotated 90 degrees, followed by a stripe coating process to form a grid-type coating on the substrate.
