    Abstract: A bypass apparatus for lubricant in an unregulated pressurized gearbox including: a block including a lubricant inlet in fluid communication with a pressure relief valve, wherein the pressure relief valve diverts lubricant into the gearbox or into an oil filter, wherein lubricant is returned to the gearbox when the lubricant is cold and/or pressure at the pressure relief valve is high to reduce damage to the gearbox caused by high pressure during a cold start, and when the lubricant temperature increases and the pressure is reduced the pressure relief valve closes and lubricant enters the oil filter.

    Abstract: A method of fastening gearbox housing components together, comprising: selecting a gearbox housing fastener comprising a straight shaft having a longitudinal axis, a first threaded portion, a single cylindrical central portion, and a second threaded portion, wherein the first and second threaded portions are separated by the cylindrical portion, wherein the cylindrical portion comprises a single reduced diameter that is less than first and second minor diameters of the first and second threaded portions, the first and second threaded portions are chamfered, and the fastener comprises a material having a tensile strength along the longitudinal axis that is greater than a sheer strength at the cylindrical portion; and fastening the gearbox housing components together with the fastener, wherein the first and third gearbox housing components are fastened with the first and second threaded portions, and the second gearbox housing component is positioned around the single cylindrical central portion.

    Abstract: A torque-transfer component has splines configured for engaging a corresponding feature of another component, at least a portion of each spline being hardened before a friction-reducing surface coating is applied to the splines. The splines are preferably hardened by nitriding, carburizing, induction hardening, or laser hardening, and the friction-reducing coating preferably comprises diamond-like carbon or tungsten carbide. The coating can be applied using, for example, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, chemically assisted physical vapor deposition, autocatalytic electroless deposition, electroplating, or an oxygen fuel gun.
