Abstract: A printing apparatus includes a transport unit, a printing unit, a drying unit, and a control unit. The drying unit includes a contact heating unit with a contact heating surface configured to contact a back surface of a medium and an airflow ejecting unit with an airflow ejecting port. The control unit performs first control and second control. In the first control, the airflow ejecting unit is controlled such that an airflow is a first velocity. In the second control, an airflow velocity is slower than the first velocity. While the printing apparatus being in operation, the control unit performs the first control when a stopping period is less than a predetermined period, and performs the second control when the stopping period is equal to or more than the predetermined period, the stopping period being a period in which transporting the medium is at rest.

Abstract: The invention includes an aggregating agent coating section configured and arranged to apply an aggregating agent in a form of a powder to a recording medium and an ink discharge section configured and arranged to discharge an ink that is aggregated by the aggregating agent onto the recording medium to which the aggregating agent is applied. According to this configuration, applying the aggregating agent in the form of a powder the recording medium makes it possible to apply the aggregating agent to the recording medium without having to apply a treatment liquid that contains the aggregating agent to the recording medium. As such, the need for a step for drying a recording medium, which has been performed in instances where a treatment liquid was applied to the recording medium, is obviated.
