Abstract:
An apparatus includes an apparatus comprising a slider. The slider comprises a substrate comprising a media-facing surface, a first side surface perpendicular to the media-facing surface, and a second side surface opposite the first side surface. A heat sink layer is formed proximate to and thermally coupled to the first side surface of the substrate. A write transducer comprises a waveguide core that at least partially extends from the top surface to the media-facing surface. The waveguide core is formed proximate to and thermally coupled to the heat sink layer. A read transducer is formed proximate to the write transducer such that the read transducer is closer to a trailing edge of the slider than the write transducer.
Abstract:
A magnetic recording head includes a plurality of writers and at least one reader. The plurality of writers and the reader define a plurality of close points of the head. The plurality of writers are spaced apart from one another in a cross-track direction and positioned in the same plane of the head. A plurality of contact sensors are positioned proximate the plurality of writers and the reader. The contact sensors are coupled together and to a pair of electrical bond pads of the head and configured to sense for head-disk contact at each of the close points.
Abstract:
A write head having a main pole having a pole tip proximate an air bearing surface (ABS), the main pole having a leading side and a trailing side. The write head also includes a yoke having a yoke tip recessed from the ABS, and a helical coil wrapped around the main pole and the yoke. The helical coil has a first turn with its front edge at least substantially aligned with the yoke tip.
Abstract:
A writer assembly having two separately driven write coils allows a combined write field generated by the writer assembly to be fine turned and optimized for a particular application. Two preamplifiers may be incorporated into a printed circuit board in order to separately drive the write coils. In other implementations, there may be more than two write coils and corresponding preamplifiers.
Abstract:
An apparatus includes a slider of a heat-assisted magnetic recording head. The slider comprises an air bearing surface, a substrate, and a plurality of electrical bond pads coupled to bias sources. A writer is positioned proximate the substrate. The writer comprises write coils coupled between first and second bond pads. At least one heater is coupled between the first and second bond pads. The at least one heater is disposed within the writer and is configured to thermally actuate the air bearing surface of the writer. A reader is disposed on the slider such that the writer is between the substrate and the reader. Write induced protrusion of the air bearing surface of the writer is moderated by stiffness of the substrate proximate the writer.
Abstract:
A apparatus includes first and second read transducers arranged on a media-facing surface. The read transducers detect magnetic fields of a recording medium. First and second heaters are disposed proximate the respective first and second read transducers. The first and second heaters independently control respective first and second protrusions of the first and second read transducers from the media-facing surface.
Abstract:
A recording head includes a substrate, a read transducer, a waveguide core, and a near-field transducer at an end of the waveguide core proximate a media-facing surface. The recording head includes a magnetic write pole and coil. A laser diode unit with one or more non-self-supporting layers of crystalline material region is transfer printed between layers of the recording head.
Abstract:
A write head having a main pole having a pole tip, the main pole having a leading side and a trailing side; and a coil structure around the main pole, the coil structure having no more than two active turns on the trailing side. A non-active, or dummy turn, may be present.
