Provided is a display device including a plurality of light sources configured to be driven by a driving voltage, turned on during an on section, and turned off during an off section, a display panel configured to display an image by using light outputted from the light sources, a voltage converter connected to the light sources and configured to generate the driving voltage, and a backlight control circuit including a light source driving circuit and a voltage drop circuit. The light source driving circuit includes a pulse generator including a control input terminal configured to receive a first voltage during the on section and receive a second voltage during the off section and output a control pulse signal to control a level of the driving voltage based on a voltage applied to the control input terminal. The voltage drop circuit applies the second voltage to the control input terminal during the off section. The second voltage is smaller than the first voltage.

A light source device capable of preventing luminance from being decreased, a driving method of the light source device and a display device having the light source device are disclosed. Alight source device includes a plurality of light-emitting diode (“LED”) strings and an LED driving circuit. The LED strings include LEDs emitting lights connected in serial. The LED driving circuit supplies a driving voltage to the LED strings. The LED driving circuit maximizes the driving voltage supplied to the LED strings by using the minimum string current of string currents supplied to each LED string in an initial driving period. The LED driving circuit supplies the maximum driving voltage to the LED strings by blocking a current flowing through a sensing resistor disposed to sense the minimum string current in a normal driving period.

A backlight unit includes: a power converter to generate a light-source power voltage according to a voltage control signal; an LED string connected to the light-source power voltage; a short-circuit detector to receive the light-source power voltage and to enable a short-circuit signal; and a light source controller to generate the voltage control signal to interrupt generation of the light-source power voltage when the short-circuit signal is enabled. The short-circuit detector includes: a voltage divider to divide the light-source power voltage to output a detection voltage; and a comparing circuit to generate a reference voltage corresponding to a voltage level of the detection voltage, to compare the reference voltage with the detection voltage, and to enable the short-circuit signal in accordance with a result of the comparison.
