1. A FILM FORMING POLYAMIDE CONSISTING ESSENTIALLY OF THE POLYMERIC CONDENSATION PRODUCT PREPARED BY REACTING AN AROMATIC CARBOCYCLIC DIISOCYANATE AND FUMARIC ACID IN AN INERT POLAR SOLVENT BOILING ABOVE 100*C, AT A TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 50-240* C, WHILE MAINTAINING A MOLAR RATIO OF THE DIISOCYANATE TO FUMARIC ACID OF 1:1 TO 1.5:1.

Polyamide and polyamide-imide copolymers are disclosed. These are copolymers of polycarboxylic acids or their acid chlorides or their anhydrides reacted with a diprimary aromatic diamine or a diisocyanate in an organic polar solvent at a temperature of about -30*C. to 240*C. The polymers, coatings and fibers are useful as electrical coatings and molding compositions.

1. A PROCESS FOR PREPARING HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT POLYAMIDE-IMIDE POLYMERS HAVING FILM-FORMING PROPERTIES WHICH PROCESS COMPRISES FIRST CONDENSING TRIMELLITIC ANHYDRIDE AND A PRIMARY DIAMINE IN A MOLE RATIO OF ABOUT 1 TO 0.55 TO ABOUT 1 TO 0.95 AT TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 210*C, THE ABOUT 250*C. TO GIVE A LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT PREPOLYMER HAVING THE CARBOXYLIC ACID ANHYDRIDE GROUPS REACTED WITH THE DIAMINE AND A PORTION OF THE CARBOXYLIC ACID GROUPS REACTED WITH THE DIAMINE LEAVING THE REMAINING CARBOXYLIC ACID GROUPS UNREACTED (AN EXCESS OF TRIMELLITIC ANHYDRIDE MOIETIES) AND SECOND FURTHER CONDENSING THIS PREPOLYMER WITH ABOUT 0.45 TO ABOUT 0.75 MOLES TO ABOUT 0.05 TO ABOUT 0.35 MOLES OF A DIISOCYANATE FOR EACH MOLE OF TRIMELLITIC ANHYDRIDE IN AN INERT SOLVENT AT A TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 25*C. TO ABOUT 150*C.

1. A PROCESS FOR PREPARING ABRASION-RESISTANT, THERMALLY STABLE POLYAMIDE-IMIDE FILAMENTS FROM THE WATER PRECIPITATED AND WASHED POLYMER PREPARED BY REACTING ESSENTIALLY EQUIMOLAR QUANTITIES OF AN ACYL HALIDE DERIVATIVE OF TRIMELLITIC ACID ANHYDRIDE WHICH CONTAINS AT LEAST ONE ACYL HALIDE GROUP WITH THAT IN THE 4-RING POSITION AND AN AROMATIC PRIMARY DIAMINE, IN A POLAR ORGANIC SOLVENT, FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AND AT A TEMPERATURE BELOW 150*C. SUFFICIENT TO PRODUCE A POLYMER SUBSTANTIALLY IN THE POLYAMIC ACID FORM, WHICH PROCESS COMPRISES: (1) HEATING THE PRECIPITATED POLYMER AT A TEMPERATURE BETWEEN ABOUT 300*F. TO 600*F.; (2) DISSOLVING THE HEATED POLYMER INTO A POLAR ORGANIC SOLVENT AT SUCH A CONCENTRATION THAT THE SOLUTION VISCOSITY OF THE RESULTING SOLUTION IS AT LEAST ABOUT 1500 POISES WHEN MEASURED AT 25*C.; (3) SPINNING THE POLYMER SOLUTION INTO A GASEOUS ATMOSPHERE WHICH IS MAINTAINED AT A TEMPERATURE OF AT LEAST 450*F.; AND (4) CURING THE SPUN FILAMENTS FOR A TIME AND AT A TEMPERATURE ABOVE 300*F. SUFFICIENT TO CONVERT SUBSTANTIALLY ALL THE CARBOXYL AND AMIDE GROUPS AVAILABLE FOR FURTHER REACTION TO IMIDE GROUPS.

NOVEL COPOLYMERS OF THE AMIDE-IMIDE TYPE ARE MADE FROM APPROXIMATELY EQUIMOLAR AMOUNT OF A MIXTURE OF TWO OR MORE LARGELY- OR WHOLLY-AROMATIC PRIMARY IDAMINES AND AN AROMATIC POLYCARBOXYLIC-ACID-ANHYDRIDE DERIVATIVE. THESE NOVEL COPOLYMERS ARE USEFUL FOR PREPARING ENAMELS, FILMS AND MOLDED ARTICLES OF SUPERIOR PROPERTIES.
