While accessing a track on the first disk surface through the first head, the servo data on the first disk surface is read through the first head and the servo data on the second disk surface is read through the second head, thereby increasing the servo sample rate.

    摘要: A hard disk drive comprising an actuator control system that measures the temperature of an actuator coil and methods for providing the same. The control system comprises a controller and a current source controlled by the controller that generates a flow of current through the actuator so as to reposition a transducer of the drive. The control system further comprises sampling means for sampling at least one electrical characteristic of a conducting path defined by the coil. The control system measures the temperature by monitoring the current flowing through the coil and/or the voltage across the coil and by extracting the coil temperature from the monitored values. In one embodiment, the control system obtains a measurement of the coil by successively approximating the resistance of the coil until an estimated back emf component of the voltage across the coil.

Typically, four to six commutation cycles occur for each rotation of the rotor of the motor. Unlike traditional commutation methods where only six phases are commutated during one commutation cycle, the hybrid commutation cycle includes 12 phases. The particular method for commutation switches between current driving modes where one driving mode drives current through all three windings and an other driving mode drives current through less than all three windings of the motor. More particularly, in the second driving mode current is driven through two windings of the motor. During a commutation cycle, these driving modes are alternated.

During a power failure, the data storage system may use back EMF (BEMF) voltage from the spindle motor of the disk to park the heads of the disk and/or store data in the NVM. In one embodiment, a demand regulation circuit regulates loads that use voltage generated from the BEMF. The demand regulation circuit may be used to selectively cause a controller to adjust the rate of programming to the NVM in order to reduce the load. For example, the demand regulation circuit may assert a throttle signal to the controller upon detecting that the voltage generated from the BEMF is below a certain threshold. Programming rate may be throttled, programming cycles may be staggered, and/or programming time may be lengthened. Throttling may enable the use of smaller circuitry.
