The present invention relates to a process for distributing audiovisual documents transmitted from a broadcasting office. The office broadcasts the documents to fixed distribution facilities. The users approach the facility and with the aid of a portable terminal request the downloading by radio of the documents that they have selected. Once downloaded, the users can connect the portable terminal to their home so as to reproduce the documents recorded in the terminal. The present invention also relates to the distribution facility and the portable terminal making it possible to store the document.

In a system for visual telecommunications, e.g. for use by deaf people, an electronic camera (20) makes an image of a moving subject for transmission. The TV type image is passed through a contour extractor (25) to be converted to an animated cartoon line-drawing type image. The contour image is then compressed by means including a sampler (28) for image reduction, a difference detector (30) for selecting only points which change from one image to the next, a filter (34) for rejecting isolated points in the contour image, and an encoder (36) for converting sequences of on/off bits into data words for transmission, via a modem (14) over a telephone line (15). At the other end of the line a similar transmitter/receiver system decodes the received words and reconstitutes the successive images for display on a screen (46). The resulting animated cartoon type of display is adequate for communication by sign language or by lip reading, and is capable of being sufficiently compressed to be transmitted over a normal telephone line.

The invention is to be used in the Digital Video Broadcasting—Common Interface environment for accessing the Conditional Access Module (CAM). The host application handles objects of the Conditional Access (CA) through a private Application Program Interface (API). Each CAM may have its own private CA API but the data channel remains identical whatever the CAM is. This new mode coexists with the two already defined modes: low level Man Machine Interface, and high level Man Machine Interface. If a Set top Unit “understands” the private CA Application Program Interface (API), then it may access the features of the plugged CA through its private CA API Protocol. Otherwise, it remains on the standard API. With this extension, an STU can have a Conditional Access User Interface which perfectly fits into the overall User Interface of the STU. Thus b broadcaster can ensure that its look and feel are respected on its STUs. A manufacturer can build an STU especially optimized for a given or a plurality of Cas but still able to run other CAs.
