Abstract: A positive electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries comprises a lithium transition metal composite oxide that has secondary particles each formed from aggregated primary particles and a surface modification layer that is formed on the surface of each of the primary particles of the lithium transition metal composite oxide, in which the lithium transition metal composite oxide contains at least Al and Ni in an amount of 80 mol % or more relative to the total number of moles of metal elements excluding Li, the surface modification layer contains W and at least one of Sr and Ca, and the content of W in the surface modification layer is 0.075 mol % or less relative to the total number of moles of the metal elements excluding Li in the lithium transition metal composite oxide.

Abstract: A positive electrode active material contains a lithium transition metal composite oxide that contains 85% by mole or more of Ni relative to the total number of moles of metal elements excluding Li and at least one metal element M1 that is selected from among Mg, Ti, Nb, Zr and V in an amount of 3% by mole or less relative to the total number of moles of metal elements excluding Li. The ratio of the concentration of metal element M1 contained in the shell of each primary particle of the composite oxide to the concentration of metal element M1 contained in the core is from 1.01 to 20; and at least one metal element M2 of Ca and Sr is on the surface of each primary particle in an amount of 1% by mole or less relative to the total number of moles of metal elements excluding Li.

Abstract: This positive electrode has a positive electrode collector and a positive electrode mixture layer formed on the surface of the positive electrode collector. The positive electrode mixture layer contains a lithium transition metal composite oxide containing 85 mol % or more of Ni and 1-15 mol % inclusive of Al relative to the total number of moles of metal elements other than Li, and in which the total amount of Ni, Al, and Mn contained is 99.9 mol % or more. The density of the positive electrode active material in the positive electrode mixture layer is 3.45 g/cm3 or higher. In an observation of a cross-section of the positive electrode using a scanning electron microscope, the proportion of the cross-section area of the lithium transition metal composite oxide devoid of cracks relative to the cross-section area of the lithium transition metal composite oxide exposed on the cross-section is 51% or higher.

Area basis weight of the positive-electrode mixture layer is 250 g/m2 or more. In the electrode assembly, three or more positive-electrode leads are led out.
