Abstract: Various communication systems may benefit from improved communications for a cloud radio access network. For example, certain communication systems may benefit from an improved S1 interface that connects a network entity to front ends in a cloud radio access network. A method, in certain embodiments, may include receiving at least one setup message at a network entity from a plurality of front ends. Multiple connections may be established between the network entity and the plurality of front ends. The method may also include choosing at least one of the multiple connections to transmit another message to one of the plurality of front ends which map back to a common set of at least one radio access points, network nodes, or cells, and transmitting the another message through the chosen one of the multiple connections to the common set of at least one radio access points, network nodes, or cells.

Abstract: Various communication systems may benefit from adaptive handling of communication loads. For example, certain wireless communication systems may benefit from a method and application programming interface between a radio access network and a controller to optimize inter-frequency load balancing (IFLB). A method can include receiving policy inputs regarding how the IFLB should be operated. The method can also include negotiating a functional split of IFLB-related functions for the purposes of executing inter- frequency load-balancing. The method can further include receiving a set of data/attributes related to facilitate determination of optimal settings for IFLB.

Abstract: Embodiments concern managing traffic in a radio device. While classifying user-plane packets from multiple applications according to quality of service requirements, a specific user-plane packet is classified as/determined to be a predetermined special-type packet (e.g., the special-type packets establish a new TCP/IP connection for a newly activated application). Based on that, that specific user-plane packet is mapped to a pre-defined radio bearer associated with a preconfigured priority, for example a highest priority among all bearers to which any of these user-plane packets from the multiple applications are mapped. Then all the mapped user-plane packets are scheduled for transmission according to their respective priorities. For example, the specific user-plane packet could be a SDU having a SYN, SYN-ACK or ACK, and the network convergence sub-layer (NCS) constructs a L2 NCS PDU using a designated format with the SDU in the payload and context information in the header.

Abstract: Various communication systems may benefit from improved communications in a cloud radio access network. A method, in certain embodiments, may include receiving, at a network node frontend, which supports at least one of a first cell identification or a first base station identification, an indication that at least one of a second cell identification or a second base station identification is supported by a plurality of other network node frontends. The method may also establishing multiple connections between the network node frontend and the plurality of other network node frontends in which at least one of the second cell identification or the second base station identification is supported. In addition, the method may include transmitting a message related to the second cell identification or the second base station identification using any one of the multiple connections between the network node frontend and the plurality of other network node frontends.
