The input and/or output device for process data has a mounting rack (1), as well as a plurality of modules (2) fastened on the mounting rack (1). A process connector (4) can be inserted into each of the modules (2) on the front side in each case. The terminal strip (18) serves to receive contact pins (26) which interact with contacts of the process connector (4). The input and/or output device is intended to demonstrate a high degree of operational reliability even in the case of a high level of mechanical and electromagnetic stresses. This is achieved in that the module housing (8) is predominantly formed from metal plate and has lugs (21, 22, 23) formed out of the metal plate which serve to carry the circuit board (17), some of which lugs are electroconductively connected to a conductor track (32) of the circuit board (17), and in that the module housing (8) is in contact with a metal part of the mounting rack (1) which is at ground potential.

An ATM communication system for statistical multiplexing of message cells has a plurality of upstream interfaces, at least one multistage funnel of switching elements connected thereto, and at least one downstream interface. Each of the switching elements comprises a plurality of inputs and at least one output to which a logical queue is associated. The logical queue of each of the switching elements is common for different traffic classes. For the filling of the logical queues to each of the traffic classes, a predetermined threshold is defined. In case of exceeding the threshold for the respective traffic class by receiving a message cell for this traffic class, a back pressure signal is transmitted only to the switching element or upstream interface, respectively, just transmitting this message cell. The transmission of message cells is stopped by this switching element or upstream interface, respectively, for a predetermined period of time periodically until a resetting of the back pressure signal.

The server switching unit (SSC) contains an AAL2 switcher (ASW) that is configured for simultaneous processing of a maximum plurality (m) of incoming connections. An AAL2 routing list (RL1 . . . RLm) is provided for each of these connections, and a microprocessor (MPR) is configured to limit the allowable value range for VPI/VCI values in the header of the ATM cells according to the plurality of AAL2 routing lists, so that only the corresponding VPI/VCI coding bits are taken into consideration at an interface to the switching network.

A method for optimizing the transmission of ATM cells via connection sections wherein, in order to decide which ATM cells stored in waiting ques are to be multiplexed onto further connection sections and at which point in time, connection information together with a respectively allocated time mark is stored in a sorted list according to the criterion of a predetermined ordering rule. Such rule is fashioned such that the time value assigned to the connection information is stored in a predetermined sequence in the sorted list and a check is carried out when new connection information is stored to see whether the time value allocated thereto can be entered into the sorted list.
