The MAC control element including the power headroom reports for the primary and secondary component carriers may be transmitted from the wireless terminal to the base station over one of the component carriers. An activation command corresponding to an UL secondary component carrier, SCC, is received (64), in response to which the receiving transceiver determines (65) whether it has valid timing information for the UL SCC, wherein valid timing information for the UL SCC indicates that the UL SCC is UL synchronized. In response to this determination, transmission of SRS on the UL SCC is enabled (66) if the UL SCC is synchronized, when SRS is configured for the UL SCC. Otherwise, transmission of SRS on the UL SCC is prohibited (68) until the UL SCC is UL synchronized.

The base station then sends a second TA command based on the detected need to maintain different uplink transmission timing. If all signals are decoded correctly in the receiving node, a positive acknowledgement message (ACK) is sent to the transmitting node; if not all signals are decoded correctly, a negative acknowledgement message (NACK) is sent, or no acknowledgement message is sent. In this way, a single acknowledgement message can be sent for signals received over multiple carriers. The acknowledgement message can have the same format as legacy standards (for example, as specified in Release 8 of the 3GPP specifications), providing compatibility with existing equipment. The number of messages is also reduced compared with the straightforward approach of transmitting individual acknowledgement messages per component carrier.
