    Abstract: A laser velocimeter system for measuring the relative velocity between a carrier and a light scattering source illuminated by laser light. Light energy reflected from the laser illuminated scattering source is utilized to derive a signal indicative of the relative velocity. The reflected energy passes through a moving optical grating and is received by a light sensitive detector. The output signal of the detector is modulated by the effect of the grating moving across the speckle field of the reflected laser light, with the motion of the grating providing a velocity bias to the system.

    Abstract: A laser velocimeter system for measuring the relative threedimensional vectorial velocity between a carrier and the surface over which the carrier moves. Light energy reflected from laser illuminated portions of the surface is utilized to compute the velocity of the carrier along each of three orthogonal coordinates. Different portions of the reflected energy are received by three light sensitive detectors after the energy first passes through coplanar optical gratings-a separate grating being associated with each of the light sensitive detectors. The output signals of the detectors are modulated by the effects of the gratings; and these last mentioned signals are processed by frequency tracker units and by a computer to provide signals representative of the relative vectorial velocity.
