A cover for an electric furnace has apertures for the electrodes, and includes a number of portions in the form of sectors, to each of which an electrode is allotted, the cover being adjustable to vary the inter-electrode spacing by radial shifting of the sectors. Sectors 1, 2, 3 have electrode apertures 4, 5, 6, and may be moved radially outwards to increase the interelectrode spacing. The gaps 10 are bridged by flanged insulating bricks, and movable cover portions 7, 8 and 9 may be provided. Specification 979,642 is referred to.
