Abstract: Techniques are described for using route target constraint to filter routes advertised to a node in a seamless Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network. For example, a first router of a first network may generate a first border gateway protocol (BGP) message to advertise routing information for a first node of the first network, the first BGP message indicating a transport class and specifying an address-specific route target, the transport class comprising one or more tunnels to the first node that share common characteristics. In response to receiving a second BGP message originated by second node of a second network, the second BGP message comprising the address-specific route target, the first router sends the first BGP message to a second router of the second network for sending to the second node to cause the second node to import the routing information.

Abstract: A bit indexed explicit replication (BIER) network device may receive, from a first network device, information associated with a BIER proxy device that is associated with the first network device, and may transmit, to the BIER proxy device and based on receiving the information, a BIER-encapsulated multicast packet via a first tunnel between the BIER network device and the BIER proxy device. The BIER proxy device may be to transmit, via a second tunnel through the first network device, a first copy of the BIER-encapsulated multicast packet to a second network device.

Abstract: In some examples, a method includes receiving, by a first provider edge (PE) device of a layer 3 network, configuration data configuring the PE device to provide, via an Ethernet segment with an edge device, active-active multi-homing layer 2 (L2) virtual bridge connectivity to the edge device using an Ethernet Virtual Private Network (EVPN) instance; receiving, by the first PE device, a multicast Join message for multicast traffic, the multicast Join message identifying a second PE device that also participates in the EVPN instance; processing, by the first PE device, the multicast Join message to generate multicast forwarding state; and forwarding, by the first PE device based at least on the multicast forwarding state, the multicast traffic.

Abstract: The disclosed computer-implemented method may include (1) receiving, at an upstream router of a multicast distribution tree, a packet that is destined for a receiver within an MPLS network, (2) identifying within the packet (A) a context label that specifies a controller and (B) a tree label that is assigned by the controller, (3) identifying a forwarding table that corresponds to the context label identified within the packet, (4) searching the forwarding table that corresponds to the context label for the tree label that specifies the multicast distribution tree, (5) identifying, based at least in part on the search, a downstream router of the multicast distribution tree that is to receive the packet on the way to the receiver, and then (6) forwarding the packet to the downstream router of the multicast distribution tree on the way to the receiver. Various other methods, systems, and apparatuses are also disclosed.

Abstract: A network device receives multicast packets that include information identifying destinations in the network, identifies next hops associated with the destinations, and populates a cache with the destinations and addresses of the identified next hops. The network device receives a particular multicast packet that includes information identifying particular destinations included in the cache, identifies one or more next hops for the particular destinations from the cache, and forwards the particular multicast packet to the identified one or more next hops to permit the identified one or more next hops to forward the multicast packet toward the particular destinations.

Abstract: The techniques of this disclosure may improve multicast forwarding in an Ethernet Virtual Private Network when delivering multicast traffic to receivers on a different IP subnet than the multicast source. A method may include configuring first and second layer-2 domains to forward network traffic; configuring a first layer-3 Integrated Routing and Bridging (IRB) interface for the first layer-2 domain and a second layer-3 IRB interface for the second layer 2 domain; receiving a multicast packet from a multicast source device, the multicast source device being included in the first layer-2 domain, the multicast packet having a multicast receiver device in the second layer-2 domain; and forwarding, using the first and second layer-3 IRB interfaces, the multicast packet to the multicast receiver device, without receiving the multicast packet from another provider edge router that has been elected as the designated router on the second IRB interface for the second layer-2 domain.

Abstract: A network device may receive, from a first neighbor network device, information indicating that the network device is to remove a bit indexed explicit replication (BIER) header from a multicast packet prior to transmitting the multicast packet to the first neighbor network device. The network device may receive the multicast packet from a second neighbor network device, where the multicast packet includes the BIER header and is to be transmitted to the first neighbor network device, and where the network device, the first neighbor network device, and the second neighbor network device are included in a same BIER domain. The network device may remove the BIER header from the multicast packet, and may transmit the multicast packet to the first neighbor network device after removing the BIER header from the multicast packet.
