The projection display apparatus includes: a light source for emitting a coherent light beam; a light valve having an image-forming region for modulating a light beam propagating from the light source, thereby to generate and emit an image light beam; a lighting-optical system for guiding to the image-forming region the light beam propagating from the light source; a projection-optical system for enlarging and projecting the image light beam emitted by the image-forming region; and a diffusion device located in the lighting-optical system and in the vicinity of a position optically conjugated with the image-forming region. The diffusion device has a structure in which a plurality of microscopic optical elements is regularly arranged on a base plane perpendicular to a propagation direction of a light beam propagating from the light source.
