    Abstract: A pneumatic animal stunner, comprising a housing having a stunning rod therein capable of being driven along a longitudinal axis forward to stun an animal and rearward to retract the stunning rod, a handle having a valve trigger to control flow of pressurized fluid to drive forward and retract the stunning rod, an alert nozzle disposed on the housing for releasing a supply of pressurized fluid, an alert passageway running to and connecting with the alert nozzle to supply the alert nozzle with the pressurized fluid, and an alert nozzle actuator for supplying the pressurized fluid to the alert passageway. Upon engagement of the alert nozzle actuator, pressurized fluid traverses through the alert passageway and releases through the alert nozzle.

    Abstract: An animal stunner for use in livestock/slaughterhouse operations has a piston slideable within an inner chamber, and a fire pressure chamber with an annular configuration disposed adjacent the rearward or central end of the inner chamber. A stunning rod is driven forward by the piston to stun the animal and rearward to retract the rod. A valve system alternately controls flow of the pressurized fluid from the fire pressure chamber to the rearward end of the inner chamber to move the piston and drive the stunning rod. A catch system holds and releases the stunning rod. A compressed fluid supply is used to retract the stunning rod between operation cycles. Handles employing triggers are used by the operator to hold the stunner and to activate the valve system, and cushion mount systems are attached between the handles and stunner housing to absorb shock while operating the stunner.

    Abstract: A pneumatic animal stunner for stunning an animal for later processing uses sensor technology to measure the speed of a stunning rod disposed in the stunner housing as it is driven forward via pneumatic forces. At least one sensor may be disposed in a nose connected to a front end of the housing, in the housing, or in a tail end of the housing. The at least one sensor communicates with a receiver that can process and display the speed data collected from the at least one sensor as the stunning rod drives forward. The receiver can be disposed on the housing of the stunner, or may be a separate component from the stunner. The data may be sent from the at least one sensor to the receiver via a wireless or wired connection. Multiple methods of measuring the stunning rod speed may be employed.

    Abstract: A stunning rod for a pneumatically operated animal concussion stunner comprises an elongated body. One end of the elongated body is adapted to receive a locking insert, and the other is adapted to engage a catch. The locking insert receives a locking element, wherein the combined locking insert and locking element are inserted into the first end of the elongated body. A strike end having a diameter larger than the diameter of the elongated body is secured to the first end of the rod via the locking insert and locking element. Locking grooves or protrusions disposed on the strike end interact with the locking insert to prevent rotation of the stunning rod and strike end during stunner operation. Lobes or flanges disposed about the periphery of the locking element interlock with grooves disposed within the rod first end, and further prevent rotation of the strike end during stunner operation.

    Abstract: A catch engagable with a catch pivot ring for capturing and releasing a stunning rod moveable along a longitudinal axis in a pneumatic animal stunner for stunning an animal. The catch comprises a plurality of arcuate sections substantially forming a cylinder, each arcuate section having a forward end and a rearward end.
