    摘要: An earth-boring bit has rolling cutters, each attached to a bit leg depending from a bit body. Each of the cutters has hardfaced, milled teeth. A spear point is located on one of the cutters. The spear point has a neck that protrudes toward the axis of the bit from a conical portion of the cutter. Blades are located on the spear point with spaces located between the blades. A layer of hardfacing is applied to the entire spear point area including the blades, the spaces and the neck.

    摘要: An earth-boring bit has hardfacing that has multiple grades and an overlapped portion. One of the layers is of a different grade than the other so as to provide more wear resistance. The other provides more toughness than the wear resistant layer. The more wear resistant layer has a greater volumetric density of carbide particles. The greater density is primarily achieved by using a majority of the particles of smaller dimension than in the less wear resistant hardfacing. The overlapped portion may be on an outer or gage end of the outer row of teeth.

    摘要: An earth-boring bit has a bit body and at least one cutter rotatably secured to the bit body. The cutter includes a plurality of teeth formed integrally with the cutter and arranged in circumferential rows. Each tooth has inner and outer ends, leading and trailing flanks, and a crest transversely connecting the ends and flanks. A thickness of wear-resistant material is applied over the crest and at least a portion of the ends and flanks of the tooth. An extending layer of wear-resistant material is applied at the intersection of the leading flank and the outer end to provide twice the hard-facing thickness and increased wear-resistance in that area of the tooth that is subjected to the greatest wear.

    摘要: An earth-boring bit has a bit body with at least one earth disintegrating cutter mounted on it. The cutter is generally conically shaped and rotatably secured to the body. The cutter has a plurality of teeth formed on it. The teeth have underlying stubs of steel which are integrally formed with and protrude from the cutter. The stubs have flanks which incline toward each other and terminate in a top. A carburized layer is formed on the flanks and the top to a selected depth. The stub has a width across its top from one flank to the other that is less than twice the depth of the carburized layer. A layer of hardfacing is coated on the tops and flanks of the stub, forming an apex for the tooth.

    摘要: An earth boring bit rotatable cutter having a first hardfacing composition of carbide particles selected from the class of cast and macrocrystalline tungsten carbide dispersed in a steel matrix deposited on the gage surface of at least some of the heel row teeth. A substantial portion of these particles are characterized by a high level of abrasion resistance and a lower level of fracture resistance. A second hardfacing composition of carbide particles selected from the class of spherical sintered and spherical cast tungsten is dispersed in a steel matrix deposited over at least the crest and an upper portion of the gage surface to cover the corner that tends to round during drilling. A substantial portion of the particles of this composition are characterized by a high level of fracture resistance and a lower level of abrasion resistance.

It also includes providing a non-magnetic hardfacing precursor material comprising a plurality of non-magnetic, sintered carbide pellets and a non-magnetic matrix material; heating a portion of the non-magnetic hardfacing precursor material to a temperature above the melting point of the matrix material to melt the matrix material. It further includes applying the molten non-magnetic matrix material and the plurality of non-magnetic, sintered carbide pellets to the exterior surface of the drill string member; and solidifying the molten non-magnetic matrix material to form a layer of a non-magnetic hardfacing material having a plurality of non-magnetic, sintered carbide pellets dispersed in the hardfacing material.
