Abstract: A roofing membrane includes a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) layer and a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) layer. The TPO layer forms a bottom layer of the roofing membrane, and the PVC layer is positioned atop the TPO layer so that the PVC layer forms a top layer of the roofing membrane. The TPO layer and the PVC layer are configured to be chemically compatible so that the TPO layer and the PVC layer are chemically bonded and function as a single roofing membrane. Compatibilizing includes at least one of (i) adding a compatibilizing agent to at least one of the TPO material and the PVC material prior to extrusion and (ii) positioning at least one compatibilizing film, prior to bonding, between the TPO material and the PVC material.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide improved roofing membranes and methods and systems involving the same. According to one embodiment, a roofing membrane laminate is provided. The roofing membrane laminate includes a first membrane layer that includes a thermoplastic polyolefin material and a second membrane layer positioned atop the first membrane layer and bonded thereto. The second membrane layer includes a thermoplastic polyolefin material and an acrylate additive blended with the thermoplastic polyolefin material. The acrylate additive is blended with the thermoplastic polyolefin material while both materials are resins and is added so as to comprise 10% by weight or less of the blended resins. The acrylate additive includes an ethylene backbone chain and an acrylate bonded with the ethylene backbone chain.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a roofing membrane laminate includes a first layer of an uncured ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) material and a second layer of a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) material coupled with the EPDM material. The EPDM material has a thickness of between about 50 mils and 70 mils and the TPO material has a thickness of between about 15 mils and 35 mils. The EPDM material and TPO material are coupled via crosslinking of the TPO and EPDM material at an interface thereof, whereby at least a top portion of the EPDM material is cured via the application of heat after the EPDM material and TPO material are placed into contact so as to effect crosslinking of the materials.
