Abstract: An electric vehicle includes a system performing a method of charging a battery of the electric vehicle. The system includes an electrical motor having a rotor and a plurality of windings. The vehicle is turned off to allow the rotor to come to rest at an initial rotor position. The processor controls a current through the motor to rotate the rotor to locate a boundary of an electrical lash region associated with the rotor, determines a selected winding of the plurality of windings having a phase vector located close to the electrical lash region, deactivates the selected winding, controls flow of a first current through the motor with the selected winding deactivated to rotate the rotor towards a direction of the selected winding, and controls flow of a second current from a charging station to the battery through the electric motor with the rotor rotated towards the selected winding.

Abstract: A charging system of a vehicle includes an inverter of a propulsion system, the inverter connected to an electric motor and a battery system of the vehicle, and a switching assembly including a plurality of switches. The charging system also includes a controller configured to control the switching assembly to connect the inverter and the electric motor to a charge port of the vehicle and define a conversion circuit including one or more inverter switches and the electric motor by selectively connecting the charge port to the inverter or the electric motor and selectively connecting the battery system to the electric motor by the switching assembly. The controller is configured to operate the conversion circuit to adjust at least one of an input voltage for charging the battery system from a power source, and an output voltage for discharging the battery system to charge an external energy storage system.

Abstract: An electric vehicle includes a drive system that performs a method of transferring power between a vehicle and an external location. The drive system includes a battery, a rectifier, and a processor. The rectifier is one of a two-level rectifier and a multi-level rectifier. The processor is configured to connect the rectifier between an alternating current (AC) port of an outlet of an external location and the battery. The rectifier is configured to convert between an AC power at the AC port on an external side of the rectifier and a direct current (DC) power at a vehicle side of the rectifier in order to transfer power bi-directionally between the external location and the battery.

Abstract: A system for control of an electric powertrain is provided. The powertrain includes a battery configured for providing electrical energy at a first relatively higher voltage in direct current. The powertrain further includes a power inverter including a first phase circuit, a second phase circuit including first and second switches, and a third phase circuit including third and fourth switches. The powertrain further includes a motor configured for receiving alternating current electrical energy from the power inverter. The system further includes a computerized controller operating a charging cycle. The charging cycle includes deactivating the first phase circuit of the power inverter and selectively cyclically activating the first switch, the second switch, the third switch, and the fourth switch to direct electrical energy provided at a second relatively lower voltage in direct current through the motor to provide a flow of electrical energy at the first voltage to the battery.

Abstract: Embodiments include an electric vehicle having a charging port configured to receive an alternating current (AC) power, a direct current (DC) battery, and a bidirectional inverter configured to convert AC power to DC power and to convert DC power to AC power, the bidirectional inverter is selectively connected to the DC battery by propulsion switches. The electric vehicle also includes an AC motor connected to the bidirectional inverter and selectively connected to the charging port by a first charging switch, an isolated DC/DC converter motor selectively connected to the DC battery via a second charging switch and a third charging switch, and a processor configured to control the operation of the propulsion switches, the first charging switch, the second charging switch, and the third charging switch based on an operational mode of the electric vehicle.

Abstract: An alternating current (AC) motor system includes an AC motor with a rotor and a stator with multi-phase AC stator windings. The system also includes a power inverter that generates a multi-phase AC voltage, an AC bus that connects the power inverter to the stator windings, an AC choke that surrounds the AC bus, and a current sensor with a coil wound on or surrounded by the AC choke. The current sensor measures common mode current in the AC bus, and is used in pulse width modulation or slew rate control of the power inverter, ensuring smooth operation and reducing the risk of damage due to common mode current.
