A solid state television camera having a solid state image sensing device, such as CCD image sensing device and an iris for controlling the amount of light from an image irradiated on the image sensing device. The iris is controlled by the peak level of a smear signal of a horizontal scanning line during a vertical blanking interval so that the smear signal contained in a video signal from the image sensing device is reduced. Further, the iris can be controlled by the average level of the smear signal instead of the average level of the video signal of one field as the smear signal has the whole information of the image of one field, that causes the construction of detecting circuit to be very simple and the fidelity of the iris control to be high.

In this case, the color separating characteristics of the color filter is so selected that when a predetermined horizontal scanning line is scanned, from the solid state image sensing device there are obtained a red color signal and a luminance signal of the standard system sequentially and alternately, and from a horizontal scanning line adjacent the above horizontal scanning line there are obtained a blue color signal and luminance signal. Also, as the high band component, which constitutes the above luminance signal, the high band component of a composite video output signal, which includes the primary color signal and luminance signal produced by scanning the above horizontal scanning line, is utilized. Further, by scanning the respective horizontal scanning lines, different color difference output signals obtained at every one horizontal scanning line are made in simultaneity and based upon the color difference output signals and luminance signal there is produced a color video signal of the standard system.

A portable video camera and recording apparatus is comprised of a video camera section and a recording section. The video camera section is comprised of a CCD, analogue-to-digital converters for converting signals from the CCD into digital form. The digital signals are then processed, converted into analogue form, processed in analog form, and then output as the composite video signal. A digital luminance signal and either a digital composite color signal or a plurality of digital color difference signals are received as inputs into the recording section. If the digital composite color signal is received, then the signals are time-base-compressed, converted into analogue form, the composite color signal is frequency converted and filtered and the luminance signal is frequency modulated and filtered. Next, the signals are added together and recorded onto a recording medium. If the digital color difference signals are received, the digital color difference signals are multiplexed together, converted into analogue form, frequency modulated, filtered and then recorded onto one track on the recording medium. The digital luminance signal is time-base-compressed, converted into analogue form, frequency modulated, filtered, and then recorded onto a second track on the recording medium.

An analog-signal gate circuit or sample-hold circuit is employed for processing a dot-sequential video signal derived from a solid state imaging device such as CCD imager. By changing a signal width, gain control operation is achieved, and phase shifting operation of the video signal is done by shifting an aperture center of the dot-sequential video signal. This system may be applied to a color signal conversion system wherein a dot-sequential color signal is converted directly to an NTSC color television signal. The processing rate for the remaining elements is selected to be pf.sub.sc. In addition, a D-D converter for converting the processing rate from (n/m)pF.sub.sc to pf.sub.sc is provided between the filter and the digital modulator. Thus, the digital television camera can be operated at a relatively slow sampling drive rate and can be constructed from integrated circuits.
