Electrostatic discharge (ESD) elements facilitate protection of electronic components from ESD events. The ESD element includes a pair of spark gaps between a first side and second side of the ESD element. The first side of the ESD element includes a peaked portion and a substantially planar portion. The second side of the ESD element includes a peaked portion opposite the substantially planar portion of the first side and a substantially planar portion opposite the peaked portion of the first side. This asymmetry facilitates use of peaked emitters regardless of the polarity of the charge applied to the ESD element while further facilitating the use of more optimized receiver surfaces opposite the emitters.

Apparatus comprising an appliance having three appliance contacts disposed on its bottom surface and an appliance docking tray that allows transfer of power and data. The appliance docking tray has a grid of electrical contacts disposed on its top surface, and switching apparatus, such as a processor and switch matrix, coupled to the electrical contacts of the grid. The switching apparatus electronically switches between the electrical contacts to determine which of the electrical contacts touch the appliance contacts when the appliance is disposed on the top surface of the docking tray.

Apparatus and methods for disabling a USB or other interface connection between a personal computer and a docking cradle or device until the instant such a connection is actually needed. When the docking cradle is empty, the exposed pins are connected to a conductive ground path or is isolated. When a device is inserted into the docking cradle, the electrical signals that are connected to the personal computer by way of the interface are then switched on.
