    Abstract: A method by a wireless network device in a wireless data network comprises: joining a non-storing mode destination-oriented directed acyclic graph (DODAG) in response to receiving a multicast DODAG information object (DIO) message originated by a root device; generating and transmitting a unicast destination advertisement (DAO) message destined for the root device and indicating the wireless network device has joined the DODAG; advertising as a subroot of a subDAG in the DODAG, based on outputting a second message specifying subDAG information identifying the subDAG; receiving a second unicast DAO message generated by a child network device in the subDAG and addressed to the wireless network device, the second unicast DAO message indicating the child network device has joined the subDAG; and generating and sending a third unicast DAO message to the root device specifying the child network device is reachable via the wireless network device.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a device in a network determines that a plurality of packets should be aggregated, each of the plurality of packets comprising a payload. The device generates, for each of the payloads, a sub-media access control (sub-MAC) header that comprises a sequence number and a frame check sequence (FCS). The device forms an aggregated packet that comprises a physical layer (PHY) header, a MAC header, the payloads, and the generated sub-MAC headers for the payloads. The device sends the aggregated packet to another device in the network.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a parent device in an unaligned wireless network may determine a superframe comprising a header timeslot followed by a plurality of sub timeslots. The parent device may transmit, to a plurality of child devices in the unaligned wireless network, a beacon during the header timeslot, wherein the beacon comprises i) synchronization information used by the plurality of child devices to synchronize to the header timeslot and ii) reservation information that indicates one or more reserved sub timeslots of the plurality of sub timeslots. The parent device may receive, from a particular child device of the plurality of child devices, a message during a particular sub timeslot of the plurality of sub timeslots that is different than the one or more reserved sub timeslots.

    Abstract: In a multiple interface, low power and lossy network comprising multiple nodes, a Network Management System (“NMS”) communicating firmware upgrades in each node of a network utilizing centralized scheduling and distributed dissemination of firmware blocks. A firmware update image is broken into blocks and transmitted throughout the network of nodes. In certain instances, every node does not receive every firmware block. The NMS receives a bitmap from the nodes indicating which of the blocks each node is missing from the update. The NMS identify particular nodes that are missing blocks and source nodes that have the blocks and are nearest to the particular recipient nodes. The NMS determines the route for the source node with the block to deliver the block to the recipient node that this missing a block. The source nodes that are identified and instructed to communicate a block to a recipient node.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a method comprises: generating, by a constrained low power and lossy network (LLN) device that is localized within a subregion of an LLN, a thin destination oriented directed acyclic graph (DODAG) having up to a prescribed limit of attached LLN devices at each hop of the thin DODAG based on generating a DODAG information object (DIO) message specifying an instruction for limiting attachment at each hop of the thin DODAG to the prescribed limit; and causing, by the constrained LLN device, multicast-only transmissions via the thin DODAG based on inserting into the DIO message a multicast-only transmission mode via the thin DODAG and outputting the DIO message, the DIO message causing each neighboring LLN device to selectively attach to the constrained LLN device as an attached child LLN device based on the instruction and execute the multicast-only transmissions via the thin DODAG.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a device in a mesh network rooted at a root node receives a subroot selection notification. The subroot selection notification indicates that the device should function as a root of a sub-directed acyclic graph (DAG) were a power outage to occur. The device determines that a power outage has occurred. The device forms, after determining that a power outage has occurred, a sub-DAG that is rooted at the device by establishing one or more other devices in the mesh network as routing children of the device in the sub-DAG. The device joins the sub-DAG to a DAG rooted at the root node.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a technique for dynamic transmission power in wireless mesh networks using supervised and semi-supervised learning is provided. A first device of a mesh communication network may receive a set of transmission power metrics indicative of network conditions between a second device of the mesh communication network and a plurality of child nodes associated with the second device. The first device may provide the set of transmission power metrics as input to a supervised machine learning process that probabilistically determines one or more minimum transmission power thresholds for nodes of the mesh communication network. The first device may obtain an output from the supervised machine learning process comprising an indication of a particular minimum transmission power threshold for the second device. The first device may control the second device to exchange packets with the plurality of child nodes using the particular minimum transmission power threshold.
