Abstract: A breast pump for manual operation of the type comprising a receptacle that is put against the breast to surround a teat and has a variable enclosed volume in the manner of a cylinder-and-piston-pump which when operated in contact with a breast causes the milk to be drawn into the receptacle due to the suction generated by an enlargement of the enclosed volume.The tubular part of the hollow piston is tapered such that its upper end has a smaller outer diameter than its lower end that carries an annular lip seal; consequently, the outer cylinder which is manipulated, i.e. moved to-and-fro relative to the hollow piston, can be tilted to some extent without concurrent tilting of the piston and the suction bell that is integrally connected therewith; thus, pump-induced motion of or at the sensitive area of teat and areola is minimized for improved user comfort. The suction bell is arranged at a predetermined angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tapered tubular part so that the outer cylinder can be held more nearly vertical when the pump is used in a normal sitting position; back-flow of the milk from the reservoir to the breast can be reduced or eliminated.

Abstract: The breast pump (1) for sucking off breast milk has a suction bell (10), which is intended to be laid against the breast and which is connected with a storage container (12) for pumped-off milk arranged at an angle to the longitudinal axis (A.sup.3) of the suction bell and with a suction pump (15) driven by an electric motor (11), in order to produce sufficient suction for the pumping-off process inside the suction bell; the pump (1) has an attachment housing (18) which comprises two limbs (14, 16) connected to each other at an angle, which housing is connected in a detachable manner with the suction bell (10) and contains the electric motor (11), a low voltage current source (13) for the latter, for example, a battery or an accumulator, and the suction pump (15). The longitudinal axis (A.sup.1) of one (14) of the limbs of the housing lies practically parallel to the longitudinal axis (A.sup.3) of the suction bell (10) and the longitudinal axis (A.sup.2) of the other limb (16) of the housing lies practically parallel to the longitudinal axis (A.sup.4) of the storage container (12).The new breast pump can be made of light and comparatively inexpensive parts and can be used as a compact entity similar to manual pumps, yet with the advantages of the mechanical drive. Possible vibrations act transverse to the mamilla axis and in general are felt to be beneficial and lactogenic.

Abstract: An incubator for neonatology has a chamber to receive a baby and to maintain it under aerated and heat-controlled conditions; the chamber is enclosed by a bottom shell and a transparent topy casing; heating and aerating means as well as an air distribution system are provided; passage of heat-controlled air through the chamber is optimized by a pair of superimposed horizontal trays that define two air-conducting spaces, one between the lower tray and the bottom shell and the other between the lower and the upper tray; the upper tray includes an insert that supports the baby; the lower tray is about as long as the chamber; the upper tray is shorter but less wide than the chamber; longitudinal air-passing gaps are formed between the lower tray and the bottom shell and communicate with the lower air-conducting space; transverse air-passing gaps are formed between adjacent end walls of the trays and communicate with the upper air-conducting space.The suction side of a blower is connected with one of the air-conducting spaces while the blowing side is connected with the other. When the blower is operated, two pairs of air curtains are formed, one pair by the two transverse gaps and the other pair by the two longitudinal gaps. One curtain pair is up-current, the other is down-current for passing heated air smoothly and draft-free through the chamber.The two interfitting trays provide a novel and effective air distribution system for incubators and similar devices, yet can be removed and reassembled easily for thorough disinfection between changes of patients.

Abstract: A suction bell assembly, and an elastomeric liner therefor, are disclosed in which the bell includes a rigid outer shell (10,310) of generally Y-shaped axial cross section with a conical top portion (101) and a cylindrical body portion (106). A thin, flexible, elastic liner (11) is disposed within the shell and has a conical and preferably corrugated upper portion (111) disposed within the conical top portion of the shell and a peripheral lip (114) for sealingly engaging a rim (19) extending about the shell's top portion. The liner also includes an elongated tubular portion 112 spaced normally inwardly from the shell's inner surface, the tubular portion including a resilient annular flange (119) that sealingly engages a shoulder at the lower end of the shell to maintain the liner in an axially stretched and tensioned state. one-way valve means (13,43) is formed integrally with the liner and is disposed at the lower end of the tubular portion below the flange (119). The valve means (13,43) includes a calotte-shaped closure portion (131) having at least one slit (28,438,439) to permit the passage of milk downwardly through the lower end of the liner. In preferred embodiments, each slit (28,438,439) has offset but communicating inner and outer portions (28a,28b,438a,438b, 439a,439b). Means are also disclosed for allowing swivel action of the shell (310) in relation to a connector (32) for detachably connecting the suction bell to a milk-collecting bottle.
