THE INVENTION CONCERNS THE PROVISION, IN A CONTROL SYSTEM FOR MAINTAINING NEAR AN OPTIMUM LEVEL THE AMPLITUDE OF OSCILLATION OF DIFFERENTIAL RETARDATION INTRODUCED IN A POLARIZED LIGHT BEAM BY A CYCLICALLY VARIABLE RETARDER, OF MEANS RESPONSIVE TO A LIGHT BEAM EMERGENT FROM THE RETARDER FOR CYCLICALLY DRIVING THE RETARDER. IN ONE EXAMPLE, SELF-RESONANT OSCILLATION OF THE RETARDER IS MAINTAINED BY THE OUTPUT FROM A SENSOR ATTACHED TO THE RETARDER, AND THE AMPLITUDE OF OSCILLATION OF THE PLATE IS CONTROLLED BY THE LIGHT BEAM EMERGENT FROM THE RETARDER, ALL IN SUCH
