Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing Gadoteridol of formula (I). In particular, the process comprises the use of propylene oxide in the alkylation step of the compound of formula (II), wherein propylene oxide is directly reacted with the compound of formula (II) without being isolated, and wherein propylene oxide is obtained on demand by decomposition of propylene carbonate in the presence of an alkaline or alkaline earth metal halide as catalyst.
