Abstract: A system responds to a request to enable a restoration capability for a first database instance of a first operating environment. The system stores, in the first operating environment, transaction data for the first database instance and data indicative of aspects of the configuration of the first operating environment on which the first database instance is dependent. The transaction data and configuration data are replicated to a second environment. In response to a request to restore the first database instance, a second operating environment is configured according to the replicated configuration data, and the data is restored to a second database instance, in the second operating environment, based on the replicated transaction data.

Abstract: A configuration management system tracks the configuration of a managed computing environment in accordance with a configuration tracking policy. The configuration management system uses the tracking policy to map configuration information from the managed computing environment to a hierarchy of configuration items. Items may be included or excluded from the hierarchy based on relevance to the tracking policy and a predicted amount of dynamism. A signature of the hierarchy is generated. A change to the configuration environment is detected based on a change to the signature, and an action is performed in response to the detected change.

Abstract: A configuration management system tracks the configuration of a computing environment based on a tracking policy. The configuration management system detects a change to a configuration setting included in the tracking policy, and classifies the change. The classification is indicative of an effect of the change on an ability to manage operation of the computing environment. The configuration management system initiates an action, based at least in part on the classification, in response to the change.

Abstract: Techniques for building, validating, and utilizing custom database software in a shared management environment are described. A database customization service allows users to provide database installation files as part of a configuration to generate a custom database engine version. The creation of custom database engine versions may be governed by policy, and the database customization service may provide recommendations for creating custom database engine versions according to various criteria. The custom database engine version can be built, and its functionality and correctness verified. Users may launch database instances using these custom database engine versions that can be managed under a shared management scheme where both users and the database customization service can perform host-level management.

Abstract: A distributed system responds to a request to enable restoration capability for a database instance by beginning a process for monitoring configuration changes made to a first operating environment of a first database instance. The system identifies a configuration change on which the database instance is dependent, and stores a record of the configuration change. The record is provided to a second operating environment. The second operating environment is configured, based on the record of the configuration change, to have configuration settings corresponding to the first operating environment as of the restoration point in time. The database instance is restored to the second operating environment.

Abstract: A distributed system responds to a request to enable a restoration capability for a database instance by beginning a process for replicating configuration and transaction data for the database instance. The system associates the replicated configuration and transaction data with a first account and a second account, and prevents termination of the replication process except where consent for the termination is provided by both accounts. In response to a request to restore the database instance, the distributed system accesses the configuration and transaction data using the second account.

Abstract: A configuration management service tracks the configuration of a managed computing environment in accordance with a first version of a tracking policy. When an updated version of the tracking policy is received, the configuration management service initiates tracking of the configuration in accordance with the second version of the tracking policy, while continuing to track the configuration in accordance with the first version. A change to the configuration is detected based on the first version of the tracking policy. The change is verified based on the second version of the tracking policy, and a notification of the change is provided.
