In the double absorption contact process for the production of sulfuric acid, the sump of the air drying tower and/or sulfur dioxide drying tower is connected in cascade series flow with the sump of the intermediate absorber tower which in turn is connected with the sump of the final absorber tower. The connection between the towers is effected by overflow pipes having at least one leg sealed by liquid thereby preventing any mixing of the gases in the various towers. The flow of the acid between the towers is substantially self-regulating and requires no pumps.

The reflux ratio of an industrial distillation column can be accurately varied in a programmed manner by passing the distillate through a reflux ratio regulator having an elongate housing having an elongate fluid inlet in a side wall thereof, a partition fitted axially in the housing perpendicular to the axis of the inlet and movable axially between the ends of the inlet; a first fluid outlet positioned on one side of the partition; a second fluid outlet positioned on the other side of the partition; means for varying the position of the partition along the inlet during the distillation, so that the partition divides the stream of distillate entering the housing in a varying ratio into two streams, one being withdrawn as distillate and the other being returned as reflux; and, optionally, a liquid stream divider downstream of the reflux ratio regulator comprising an elongate housing having in the side walls thereof a fluid inlet connected to one of the fluid outlets of the reflux ratio regulator and two fluid outlets, one connected to the head of the distillation column and one to means for collecting the product; a weir with a plurality of overflow indents in its upper edge positioned axially in said housing between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlets; and a liquid stream dividing wall mounted transversely in said housing and mounted perpendicularly to the weir, so that the stream of liquid flowing over the weir is divided by the dividing wall into two streams, one of which exists through the first fluid outlet and the other stream exits through the second fluid outlet.

Crude liquid phthalic anhydride produced from the catalytic air oxidation of o-xylene, and containing minor quantities of acids such as phthalic acid and in addition, compounds more volatile than phthalic anhydride, is subjected to a special pretreatment to remove the acids and the more volatile materials, said pretreatment having a relatively short residence time and comprising heating said crude liquid phthalic anhydride under a first pressure in the liquid phase to a temperature of about 235*-330* C for a sufficient time to convert said phthalic acid to phthalic anhydride and then expanding said heated liquid to a lower pressure than said first pressure to volatilize gases containing at least a portion of said more volatile substances and simultaneously cool resultant liquid to a temperature lower than the boiling point of phthalic anhydride at said lower pressure.
