A method for designing a shroud and rotor involves calculating 2D CFD of shroud-airfoil coordinates and calculating 3D CFD of shroud-airfoil and rotor models, as well as calculating 3D CFD actuator-disk shroud and rotor-model designs. The method also involves creating scaled shroud models along with modified rotor models for scale-model testing and for creating full-scale shroud and rotor models, and validating full-scale shroud and rotor designs.

Neutral airfoil fairings on structural elements upwind of a rotor can mitigate the effect of side gusts and help straighten the flow entering a rotor. Neutral airfoil fairings on structural elements placed downwind of a rotor straighten turbulent flow in a turbine wake and increase the rate at which the wake dissipates. This enables increased energy extraction at the rotor as well as closer spacing of turbines in a field.

    摘要: A “strake” is a device intended to mitigate oscillations in vortex shedding over a bluff body. In a ducted turbine, wind flowing perpendicular to the central axis of the duct can propagate oscillating vortex shedding. Such oscillations can result in resonant vibrations and cause stress or damage to the turbine and support structure. A strake is a protrusion extending upward with respect to, or perpendicular to, the outer surface of the duct that causes separation of flow over the surface and prevents oscillating vortex shedding.
