    Abstract: A horizontal directional drilling machine includes a frame providing a base, a rack movable to different drilling angles with respect to the base, and a carriage having a rotating assembly for engaging a drill rod, the carriage being movable along the rack to drive the drill rod into the ground. The horizontal directional drilling machine further includes an operator lift including an operator area provided alongside the rack and being adjustable for height with respect to the rack to provide access to the carriage for wireline operations. The operator lift is supported by at least one frame element of the frame.

    Abstract: A collection tank for a mobile vacuum excavator includes a front with a closed end, a rear with an open end, a door configured to be closed over the open end, and a linkage assembly having a first end attached to the door and a second end attached to the body. A first pivotal movement drives the first end and second end away from each other, and a second pivotal movement moves the first end and the second end toward each other. An actuator is attached to the first arm and to the second arm so that actuation of the actuator in a first direction drives the first pivotal movement and actuation of the actuator in a second direction drives the second arm the second pivotal movement.

    Abstract: A shredder includes a shredder box and a shredder rotor positioned within an interior of the shredder box. The shredder rotor is rotatable about a rotor axis and has a plurality of rotor teeth. An access door is pivotally moveable between an open position and a closed position, the access door defining a side wall of the shredder box when in the closed position. A shredder comb is positioned at an interior side of the access door and includes a plurality of shredder comb teeth. When the access door is in the closed position, the shredder comb is positioned at a shredding location to intermesh with the plurality of rotor teeth for shredding material input to the shredder box. The plurality of shredder comb teeth are removable and reversible for use in two orientations.

    Abstract: A reamer for drill string pullback of a horizontal directional drill includes a shaft portion defining a central axis and a first end configured for attachment with a drill string of the horizontal directional drill. A plurality of vanes extend radially from an outer periphery of the shaft, each of the plurality of vanes defining an outer peripheral tooth base surface. On each of the plurality of vanes, a plurality of cutter teeth are individually and removably secured along the outer peripheral tooth base surface thereof, each one of the plurality of cutter teeth including a body and a PDC insert manufactured separately from the body and joined therewith. Each cutter tooth of the plurality is coupled to the respective one of the plurality of vanes by a removable fastener extending at least partially through the cutter tooth and at least partially through the one of the plurality of vanes.

    Abstract: A horizontal directional drilling method includes operation of a HDD machine to power a drill string terminating at a drill head to create an underground borehole extending at least partially horizontally between an entry point and an exit point. A utility line and a pair of insulated wires are attached to the drill string at the exit point. An observation device is also attached to the drill string, and the observation device is connected with an uphole module via power line communication (PLC) over the pair of insulated wires. The horizontal directional drilling machine performs a pullback of the drill string, with the utility line, the pair of insulated wires, and the observation device connected thereto, back toward the entry point. Data from the observation device are displayed on the uphole module during pullback of the drill string.

    Abstract: A combination of a pullback adaptor and a drill bit includes a pullback adaptor having a first end, a second end, a body extending between the first end and the second end, and a protrusion extending from the body adjacent the second end. The protrusion has a threaded aperture defining an adaptor mounting axis, and the protrusion defines an annular planar mount surface generally perpendicular to the adapter mounting axis. A drill bit has a body with a steering surface, an aperture extending through the body at the steering surface, and an adaptor mount surface adjacent the aperture. The pullback adaptor is mounted to the drill bit with a fastener that extends through the aperture in the drill bit and into the threaded aperture of the pullback adaptor such that the annular planar mount surface of the protrusion engages the mount surface of the drill bit.
