    摘要: Apparatus for pultruding thermoplastic, resin-impregnated, fibrous substructures heats the substructures to a temperature just below the melting temperature of the resin. The heated substructures are then simultaneously pulled through a passage to conform them to a desired cross section. At least a portion of the perimeter of this passage is formed by a wave guide. The wave guide is vibrated at ultrasonic frequency in a predetermined direction so as to direct the ultrasonic vibration into the substructures within the passage. The application of the ultrasonic vibration stimulates the flow of the resin in the heated substructures. Pressure is applied to the flowing substructures within the passage to consolidate them into an integral structure conforming to the chosen profile. The ultrasonic vibration at low power input does result in some heat transfer to the profile, but the flow rates of the resin exemplify an increase in flow far greater than expected in relation to the temperature increase. The result of the application of ultrasonic vibration to the resin impregnated fibers in their unmelted state is a pultrusion process which can comfortably operate at pull rates considerably better than other processes while producing a highly uniform product.

This is provided with a series of boilers and controls, both manually adjustable and also automatic, whereby the possiblity of fire dangers are minimized, created temperature ranges of boiler gases are constrained to desirable limits, dump stack facilities are automatically controlled as to particular effectiveness for differing types of operating conditions, and where safety features are incorporated to shut down gas flow through the boiler during periods of boiler-water deficiency, excess steam generation relative to demand, and other conditions. Within the furnace area proper the pressure conditions are predetermined and are controlled during operation for desired efficiency, vapor removal, and materials' combustion. Thus, air-entrained particulates are minimized, and combustible gases as produced at the grate areas of the furnace are driven off for later, secondary combustion. Temperature control of resulting gases is maintained.

    摘要: High tensile and torque strength threads are provided on a thermoplastic composite rod by first cutting a thread at a relatively short pitch into an end of the rod. Thermoplastic composite tape is then wound in tight conformance to the cut thread so that the fibers of the tape align with the desired helix angle of the thread to be created. The rod and the tape are heated at their junction to above melt temperatures during the winding process to increase adhesion between the rod and the tape. While the end of the rod and the wound tape are at above melt temperatures, the end of the rod and the tape are compressed in a die conforming to the desired ultimate configuration of the thread. The tape and rod are then permitted to cool until sufficiently hardened to permit release of the compressing die without deformation of the threaded end of the tape. The result is a thermoplastic composite rod having high tensile and torque strength at its threaded end.

    摘要: A new and improved reciprocating grate system for furnaces and incinerators wherein the system is advantageously constructed to accomplish a variety of objectives. Adjacent flights of adjacent portions of the composite grate structure reciprocate back and forth and the speed and stroke of such reciprocation can be ganged, coupled, or independently controlled. The individual grates themselves are advantageously configured for suitable spreading and air mixture relative to debris advancement. Air seals are provided and batch feed is accommodated. Grate frame reciprocation is accommodated by fluid control means, either hydraulic or pneumatic, and features are provided for enabling appropriate adjustment both of drive and stroke of related individual components.

    摘要: A reinforced pultrusion product comprises a polymeric matrix, at least one longitudinally oriented buckled reinforcement fiber embedded in said polymeric matrix, and at least one longitudinally oriented linear reinforcement fiber embedded in said polymeric matrix. The product is formed through a pultrusion process wherein a set of composite strands comprising reinforcement fibers and polymeric fibers are provided. A supplemental tension force is applied to a first subset of the composite strands. The composite strands are heated such that the polymeric fibers of a second subset of composite strands shrink to cause the reinforcement fibers in each of the second subset of composite strands to buckle. The heated set of composite strands, including the buckled reinforcement fibers, are consolidated in a pultrusion die.
