Abstract: A GRINDING HEAD INCLUDING A ROTARY GRINDING WHEEL IS SUPPORTED FROM A VEHICLE FOR MOVEMENT ALONG AND IN GRINDING ENGAGEMENT WITH A RAIL. A PORTION ONLY OF THE WEIGHT OF THE GRINDING HEAD IS SUPPORTED FROM THE VEHICLE BY FLUID PRESSURE MEANS INCLUDING AN EXPANSIBLE CHAMBER THE VOLUME OF WHICH VARIES WITH VARIATIONS IN THE OPERATING LEVEL OF THE GRINDING HEAD. THE UNSUPPORTED WEIGHT OF THE GRINDING HEAD IS APPLIED AS OPERATIVE PRESSURE OF THE GRINDING WHEEL AGAINST THE RAIL. A PRESSURE CONTROL UNIT IN COMMUNICATION WITH THE EXPANSIBLE CHAMBER AUTOMATICALLY VARIES THE PRESSURE OF FLUID IN SUCH CHAMBER AS THE GRINDING HEAD DEVIATES FROM A PREDETERMINED OPERATING LEVEL TO ABRUPTLY INCREASE THE OPERATING PRESSURE AS THE GRINDING HEAD FALLS BELOW SAID LEVEL AND TO ABRUPTLY DECREASE SUCH PRESSURE AS THE GRINDING HEAD RISES ABOVE SUCH PREDETERMINED LEVEL.

Abstract: Ballast cleaner mechanism carried by a railroad car along a railroad track in which an infeed conveyor supported on the car receives the dirty ballast and divides it into a multiplicity of substantially equal streams of ballast which are discharged laterally on opposite sides of the conveyor at predetermined locations along its length onto a similar plurality of shaker screens. The clean ballast from these screens is discharged onto a clean ballast conveyor, disposed beneath and generally parallel to the infeed conveyor for delivery to a suitable discharge point, while dirt conveyors disposed on opposite sides of and parallel to the clean ballast conveyor are located beneath the respective screens for reception and removal of the dirt sifted through the screens from the dirty ballast.

Abstract: Method for grinding rails by means of a rail-borne vehicle, a frame movably supported on the vehicle, and at least one grinding unit adjustably mounted on the frame and arranged to provide at least one rail grinding zone. A rail follower is mounted on the frame substantially in line with the grinding zone, and the grinding unit is so supported that at least the grinding zone is adjustable transversely of the rail direction. At least one of the grinding zone and rail follower is locatable at different selected longitudinal spacings. The follower includes at least two points which contact the rail and by adjusting the grinding zone relative to the two point contact afforded by the follower, an optimum grinding position can be obtained dependent on the irregularities of the rail to be trued.
