A collision sensing system for a side air bag system has a door opening state detector and an air bag actuation inhibiter. The side air bag system is provided with an air bag which is confined in a side door of a vehicle and inflated and expanded in a space between an occupant of the vehicle and the inner side wall of the compartment such as the side door when a collision detector detects a vehicle collision. The air bag actuation inhibiter inhibits the inflation of the air bag when the door opening state detector detects the open state of the side door.

A clip engages an assist grip with an engaging portion of the clip engaged with a clip insertion hole of an attachment part. The assist grip is mounted to a body panel by engaging a first locking pawl of the clip with a rear surface of the body panel, and engaging a second locking pawl of the clip with a front surface of the body panel. A pressure plug is fitted into a rear end gap portion of the clip when a cap on the attachment part is closed.

A head protecting air bag apparatus includes a lid and an air bag. The lid is disposed at an upper edge side periphery of an opening at a vehicle's inner side in a vehicle body and at an upper portion of a pillar portion. The air bag is attached to the vehicle's inner side of the vehicle body, is housed at a vehicle's outer side position of the lid in a folded state, and pushes and opens the lid to cover the opening when unfolding and expansion is caused by inflow of gas for expansion. The air bag is folded so that a lower edge side approaches an upper edge side, and an attachment portion at the upper edge side is attached to the vehicle body so that the air bag is housed at the vehicle's outer side of the lid. A part of a lower end of the lid is disposed at a vehicle's outer side of an upper end of a pillar garnish covering a vehicle's inner side of the pillar portion. A part of the air bag at a position where the lower end of the lid is disposed at the vehicle's outer side of the upper end of the pillar garnish has a more intensified force to push and open the lid than another part. In the head protecting air bag apparatus of the invention, when the air bag is unfolded and expanded, the lower end of the lid disposed at the vehicle's outer side of the upper end of the pillar garnish easily gets over the upper end of the pillar garnish. Then the air bag is smoothly unfolded and expanded.

An air bag is stored in the upper fringe of the openings on the cabin-inside side, while being folded. The air bag includes a gas inflow part for flowing inflation gas into the air bag, and a main body that inflates when receiving the inflation gas. The main body includes front- and rear-seat inflation chambers, and a gas passage extending forwardly from the gas inflow part and allowing the inflation gas to flow from inflow ports opened in the upper parts of the front- and rear-seat inflation chambers to the front- and rear-seat inflation chambers per se. The inflow port of the rear-seat inflation chamber is opened in a direction substantially orthogonal to an axial direction of the gas passage. A front-side peripheral edge is disposed to be higher than a rear-side peripheral edge.

An air bag system is provided in which an air bag stored in a folded state in a vehicle is adapted to be inflated by a gas supplied from an inflator through a diffuser so as to protect an occupant of the vehicle. In the air bag system, the diffuser is disposed on one side of the inflator such that the diffuser and the inflator are substantially aligned with each other, and the diffuser includes a gas feed portion that is exposed to a gas inlet formed in a generally middle portion of the air bag as viewed in a longitudinal direction thereof.

An airbag for a head protecting airbag system is adapted to be folded up and accommodated along an upper interior edge of a vehicle and to be developed and inflated to cover an interior opening of the vehicle. The airbag comprises a flexible airbag body and a flexible belt portion. The airbag body includes an inflatable portion adapted to be inflated to cover the interior opening when the airbag is inflated. The inflatable portion includes a longitudinal rod portion adapted to be inflated substantially vertically into a column shape. The longitudinal rod portion is arranged on one end side of the front end side or the rear end side of the inflatable portion. The belt portion is joined at its proximal portion to the peripheral edge of the longitudinal rod portion and is fixed at its distal end portion on the vehicle. When the airbag body is inflated, the lower end side of the longitudinal rod portion may be turned on the upper end side of the longitudinal rod portion in the forward or backward direction away from the inflatable portion. Thus, a high tension is established on the lower edge of the airbag body.

In a seat structure having a side impact air bag apparatus, a seat back frame has side frames each provided at a corresponding widthwise direction side of a seat. An air bag accommodating concave portion is formed in one of the side frames which opposes a vehicle door such that the concave portion extends inward from an end portion of the seat back frame in the widthwise direction of the seat. The air bag accommodating concave portion accommodates an inflator and a folded air bag. A seat pad is provided for covering the seat back frame, and a seat surface layer is provided for covering the seat pad. The seat surface layer covers the air bag accommodating concave portion and the seat pad.
