The method comprises the step of exhausting air up the chimney at a predetermined rate, brushing the flue from the top of the chimney down, loosening dust and both fine and larger particles, exhausting the dust and fine particles with the air, dropping the larger particles into the lower portion of the chimney, and removing the larger particles from the lower chimney portion. The apparatus includes an exhaust fan or blower positioned on the top of the chimney with the inlet thereof being in a sealing relationship with the chimney flue
