In the method, the data to be transmitted is encrypted using an encryption algorithm at the transmitting end, the encrypted data is transmitted from the transmitting end to the receiving end, and the transmitted data is decrypted using an encryption algorithm at the receiving end. The used encryption algorithm is an encryption algorithm of the radio access network UTRAN employing the wideband code division multiple access method of the universal mobile telecommunications system, in which case the input parameters of agreed format required by the encryption algorithm are created on the basis of the operating parameters of the GPRS/EDGE radio access network GERAN.

In particular, the invention relates to a method and system in which both the GMSK and the m-PSK modulation methods are available for the signal to be transmitted an in which the modulation method used at a given time can be changed to another modulation method. In the solution of the invention, the m-PSK modulator of the transmitter includes a multiplier adapted to multiply the signal to be transmitted by a given coefficient making the signal constellations of the received signal similar regardless of the modulation method. Thus, the processing of the signal in the receiver becomes easier and the quality of the transmission improves in connection with m-PSK modulation.

The present invention relates to a method and system for providing a downlink connection in a cellular network. A feedback information indicating a selected cell is transmitted to a central network element (20) controlling at least two network elements (N1–N3) serving cells (C1–C3) of the cellular network. The at least two network elements are controlled by the central network element based on the feedback information so as to establish the downlink connection. Thus, the downlink transmissions of the non-central network elements (N1–N3) are controlled by the network so as to decrease performance loss due to reception errors of the feedback information. The feedback information may be a temporary ID obtained in a site selection diversity transmission control scheme.
