The piezoelectric transducer is subjected to a mechanical force that generates a voltage that is applied to the writing tablet that erases writing on the writing tablet or a portion thereof. A further feature is a display device comprising a cholesteric liquid crystal display and a piezoelectric transducer. The piezoelectric transducer is subjected to a mechanical force that generates a voltage that is applied to the display that places the display or a portion thereof in at least one of a color reflective planar state, a substantially transparent focal conic state and a gray scale state. Also featured is a method of erasing a cholesteric liquid crystal writing tablet.

    摘要: Reflective chiral nematic liquid crystal material is disposed between a first set of electrodes and a second set of electrodes arranged on opposed sides of the material to define a collection of pixels. Fast updating dynamic drive scheme is implemented by selectively applying an electric field via the electrodes through the pixels in four phases of energization: preparation, selection, evolution, and non-select. Each phase is made up of a series of voltages having varying amplitudes. The voltage waveform is for each phase controlled based on the selection phase to achieve image uniformity. For example, the evolution voltages that are established across adjacent pixels having the same final state have initial amplitudes that are equal for both pixels to increase image uniformity.

    摘要: A method of addressing a bistable liquid crystal material having incremental reflectance properties disposed between opposed substrates is disclosed. One substrate has a first plurality of electrodes deposited thereon facing a second substrate which has a second plurality of electrodes disposed thereon. The intersection of the first and second plurality of electrodes forms a plurality of pixels. The addressing method includes applying a predetermined number of pulses to the first plurality of electrodes, and applying a like number of the predetermined number of pulses to the second plurality of electrodes. Each of the predetermined number of pulses has a different frequency, wherein the predetermined number of pulses are applied in a set time period.

    摘要: A cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) electronic writing device incorporates a dot pattern recognition system. When writing pressure is applied to the writing device an image composed of writing or drawing is displayed by a pressure sensitive ChLC polymer dispersion stacked in a multilayer system of the device. A specialized stylus with sensor and associated electronics is used to form the image on the electronic writing device. The stylus produces electrical information indicating the path or trajectory of the writing that is displayed by the electronic writing device, which can be transferred via wireless signal to any other displaying device. This forms a replica image on the displaying device that is a replica of the image on the electronic writing device.

    摘要: A multicolored pressure sensitive liquid crystal device includes a first transparent substrate that is flexible on which pressure is applied and a second substrate spaced apart from the first substrate. Also included are electrically conductive layers, one of which is in contact with the first substrate and is transparent and another of which is in contact with the second substrate. The electrically conductive layers are separated from each other. Also included is a pressure sensitive liquid crystal layer including cholesteric liquid crystal disposed between the electrically conductive layers. The liquid crystal layer includes at least first and second color regions. The first color region reflects light of a first color and the second color region reflects light of a second color. The pressure applied to the substrate results in a change in reflectance of the liquid crystal. In another aspect, the liquid crystal layer can include at least first and second regions that differ from each other in terms of a characteristic selected from the group consisting of wavelength of reflection, reflectivity, linewidth, electrooptic response, pressure sensitivity and combinations thereof.

Methods are described for fabricating identifiers on cholesteric writing tablets in particular, with varying shades of gray and hence different degrees of visibility. The identifiers are permanent and not erased when a liquid crystal image on the display is erased.
