摘要: A self-vaccine as used herein will refer to methods of operating a disk drive and the apparatus implementing such methods, which make the disk drive immune to changes in temperature, that keep the disk drive healthy when hot or cold. The invention includes a self-vaccine extending the read channel optimization parameter database of a track zone or sequence to test temperature ranges actually found in the user's operation of the disk drive. The invention also includes the self-vaccine updating the read channel optimization parameter database for an already tested temperature range, whenever there has been sufficient time passed since the read channel optimization was performed for that temperature range. The invention includes read channel optimized parameters for at least temperature ranges within the embedded disk controller, which are updated in the user's operating environment during idle time providing the self-vaccine. The invention includes disk drives including a self-vaccine method.

摘要: A circuit for controlling a write current employed in a magnetic disk recording apparatus includes a write unit for delivering the write current to a plurality of magnetic heads to enable writing of data on surfaces of magnetic disks by the magnetic heads. The write current exhibits a first magnitude that varies in dependence upon a second magnitude exhibited by a driving current provided to a write current control terminal of the write unit. A control unit generates pulse width modulated signals having duty cycles corresponding to respective predetermined write current control values to indicate the write current. A write current adjusting unit receives the pulse width modulated signals and delivers the driving current to the write current control terminal of the write unit. The write current adjusting unit adjusts the second magnitude exhibited by the driving current in dependence upon the duty cycles of the pulse width modulated signals. The write current adjusting unit smoothes the pulse width modulated signals, and generates corresponding direct current voltage levels to adjust the second magnitude exhibited by the driving current.

摘要: A method for following and reading data from a corresponding track on a magnetic disk has two embodiments. Under the first embodiment, an on-track offset value is adjusted upwardly and downwardly in an alternating manner, wherein each successive adjustment increases or decreases by a predetermined step value. Under the second embodiment, maximum and minimum values for the on-track offset value are determined by incrementing the on-track offset value upwardly and downwardly, respectively, an average value based on these maximum and minimum on-track offset values is computed, and the average value is designated as an initial on-track offset value.

摘要: A circuit and method for variably adjusting a data detecting level by using a pulse with modulation (PWM) signal. The pulse width modulation (PWM) signal having duty corresponding to a predetermined level control value is generated, and the level of the pulse width modulation (PWM) signal is detected to determine the data detecting level to a level corresponding to the detected level. A read test is performed while the level control value is incremented by a given stage from an initial level control value in response to a test mode, to determine the level control value less than that generating a data error by one stage to a maximum value. Further, the read test is implemented while the level control value is decremented by a given stage from the initial level control value, to determine the level control value greater than that generating the data error by one stage to a minimum value. Thus the initial level control value or level control value is obtained by an average value of the maximum and minimum level values. Therefore, the data detecting level adapted for each disk driving apparatus can be adjusted without modifying hardware of each disk driving apparatus, and the data error can be prevented by adaptively adjusting the data detecting level to operating circumstances.

摘要: A method of determining a head characteristic, i.e. determining whether a head has a write characteristic stronger or weaker than that of a normal write head, and a recording medium suitable to perform the method. The method includes detecting a first error rate by writing data and then reading the written data without control pole tip protrusion (PTP) contralto compensate for thermal pole tip protrusion (TPTP) in a state where the head is fully cooled, detecting a second error rate by writing data and then reading the written data with the PTP control in the state where the head is fully cooled, calculating a difference between the first error rate and the second error rate, and determining based on the calculated error rate difference whether the head is a strong write head having a stronger write characteristic than that of the normal write head or a weak write head having a weaker write characteristic than that of the normal write head. Accordingly, since an adjacent track write (ATW) problem, which may occur due to a narrow gap between adjacent tracks, and a weak write problem, which may occur due to a short media recording length per data bit, can be simultaneously considered, high reliability can be secured in terms of recording and reproducing in an HDD.

摘要: A disk drive, medium, and method controlling a write parameter of a disk drive are provided. The method of compensating for a write parameter, in order to control a write operation of a disk drive, can includes measuring a bit error rate in an optimum write condition and a bit error rate in a weak write condition for a head, and calculating a compensation value for a write parameter corresponding to a difference between the bit error rates in an optimum write condition and the bit error rate in the weak write condition. In a method, according to embodiments of the present invention, a compensation value alpha for compensating a write parameter for a predetermined period of time after the start of a write operation can be generated to prevent a weak write phenomenon at the beginning of the write operation.
