Abstract:
Low-profile igniter assemblies adapted for use with low-profile inflators as well as conventionally sized inflators are disclosed. Such igniter assemblies can comprise an adaptor, an ignition portion and a plurality of conductors coupled to the ignition portion and extending in a first direction from the ignition portion to an opening of the adapter. A connector is adapted to be slid into the opening in a second direction which is transverse to the first direction associated with the extension of the conductors from the ignition portion to the opening of the adapter. Igniter assemblies can be coupled with a body of an inflatable airbag system inflator, which inflator body may enclose a quantity of gas generant. Methods of making inflators adapted for use with inflatable airbag cushion systems are also included.
Abstract:
An airbag module has an inflator activated via an electrical connector. The inflator includes an initiation assembly having an initiator and a receptacle that retains the connector. The initiator may have a single, center pin. The initiator may be encased by a body and cover, which may be attached together by molding, vibratory welding, electromagnetic welding, or snap fitting. The connector may have projections that extend from a main body to facilitate retention of the connector by a collar, washer, a retainer attached to the body, or by the inflator housing. The body may be seated in a collar having an annular ridge that presses into the body to form a seal. The connector may have a rib designed to mesh with splines of the receptacle to enable engagement of the connector with the receptacle in multiple orientations, while preventing relative rotation between the connector and the initiator after assembly.

Abstract:
An initiator assembly for placement in an associated opening in an initiator-containing device includes an initiator device having at least one igniter element and an elastomeric overmoulding. The initiator device includes at least one of a thermoplastic initiator base and a thermoplastic adapter integrally joined to a base of the initiator-containing device. The elastomeric overmoulding is integral with at least one structural component such as the initiator base, the adapter and the base of the initiator-containing device. The elastomeric overmoulding serves to sealingly mate the initiator assembly in an initiator-accepting opening in the initiator-containing device. Also provided are corresponding methods of making an initiator assembly.
