A dowel, arranged to secure an article to the surface of a receiving material having a hollow space within it into which the dowel extends, is formed of an axially elongated dowel body and a flange member at one end of the dowel body. The flange member includes a flange part extending transversely outwardly of the dowel body. The dowel body is formed from a strip of material and includes an end part extending transversely of the axial direction of the dowel body with a threaded opening through the end part, and a pair of axially extending legs divided into webs and extending in the axial direction of the dowel body from the end part. Inwardly directed recesses are formed in the ends of the legs spaced from the end part. The flange member includes a sleeve-shaped projection extending generally perpendicularly of the flange part. The sleeve-shaped projection fits into the ends of the legs, and the dowel body and flange member are welded together at the locations where the recesses in the legs contact the sleeve-shaped projection on the flange member.

An expansion dowel assembly is adapted to secure fastening plates in spaced relation onto a structure. The expansion dowel assembly includes an axially extending sleeve-like member including an expansion section arranged to be secured into the structure and a collar section. The collar section engages the facing plate between a bearing and an abutment. An axially extending part of the collar section between the bearing and the abutment is arranged to collapse in the axial direction so that the space between the bearing and the abutment corresponds to the wall thickness of the facing plate. The axially collapsible part permits the expansion dowel assembly to be used with facing plates of different thicknesses.

A battery operated device includes a circuit connecting a DC motor (22) and a battery (9) made up of a plurality of cells (10, 11, 12) connected in series with a two-pole switch device (23) including a first switch (24) and a second switch (25). The DC motor (22) receives a lower battery voltage from an intermediate tap (17) of the battery through a first switch (24) and it receives the full battery voltage through an end tap (15) when the second switch (25) is closed so that the motor can be operated at two speeds. Further, elements are provided for preventing a short circuit between the intermediate tap (17) and the end tap (15) of the battery (9) when the second switch (25) is closed. As a result of this switching arrangement, an extensively interrupted-switching is available, so that practically no power lapses occur when switching over from one speed to the other.

An expansion dowel assembly includes an axially elongated dowel member with a flange at one end and arms extending from the flange to a junction member at the other end. By applying a force at the junction member and pulling it toward the flange, the arms can be buckled or displaced radially outwardly and collapsed in the axial direction. An abutment member is provided in the dowel for limiting the extent of axial collapsibility. The abutment member can be an axially extending sleeve member or an enlarged diameter part of a force applying member extending through the dowel member.

In a device for the melting and measured discharge of a thermoplastic adhesive material, a melting chamber is enclosed by a heating coil. The adhesive material in solid rod form is supplied into the melting chamber through a sealing sleeve formed of a material such as polytetrafluoroethylene (TEFLON). A heating element is mounted on the bearing sleeve adjacent the melting chamber to heat up the sleeve and the material within it to a desired temperature. A switch or other member is connected to the heating element on the sleeve for discontinuing its supply of heat to the sleeve when the desired temperature is reached. The part of the sealing sleeve on the opposite side of the heating element from the melting chamber can be provided with some structure to dissipate or block the flow of heat through the sealing sleeve away from the melting chamber.
