Snips, scissors or cutting pliers are provided with a gripping member so situated in relation to one of the blades that gripping or trapping of a work portion to be severed occurs between the member and the other blade, or a part associated with the other blade, on closure of the blades, the gripping member comprising a removable portion of elastically-deformable material mounted on a resilient element carried by said one of the blades. In the wire snips shown, the gripping member consists of a removable plastics or rubber sleeve 11 surrounding a steel pin 12 which is fixed to the blade 13 such that when a wire is severed, the severed portion is gripped between the sleeve 11 and the blade 14, at least until the blades are opened. Variations are described. For example, the deformable member may have a movable support on one blade which is arranged to go over-centre when the blades are closed Further, two or more deformable members may be provided alongside one another on one blade, the other blade being shaped to co-operate with all the deformable members simultaneously. Still further, the deformable member may form an extension of one blade to meet with a corresponding extension on the other blade when the blades are closed.

    Abstract: An aerial infra-red line-scanning system is provided in which rotation of a scanning rotor not only scans the terrain below the aerial vehicle and reflects the scanning beam on to an infra-red detection cell but also traverses a plurality of recording beams widthwise in succession across a film record transported close to the rotor in a direction parallel to the rotor axis. The recording beams are modulated in accordance with the signal output of the IR cell. The film is constrained, in the region where it is scanned by the recording beams, to a widthwise curvature centered on the axis of the rotor.

    Abstract: An electrical signal transmission system, applicable to the transmission of signals from trackside hot box detector equipment for railroad locomotives and rolling stock, wherein a basic pulse train is transmitted whereof the pulses are of a selected first amplitude and represent a train axle count, and a spike pulse of greater selected amplitude is transmitted, occurring immediately after the axle count pulse to which it relates, whenever an overheated axle box is detected. To enable the signal receiving equipment to determine on which side of a train the overheated box is located, the spike pulses are of two different amplitudes corresponding, respectively, to opposite sides of the train.
