A release tool for a quick connector with a radially displaceable retainer has a pair of arms extending from a collar which are normally disposed on axially extending surfaces of the housing of the female component of the quick connector when the release tool is mounted on the housing. A retainer engaging surface on each of the arms is movably engageable with projections on side legs of the retainer to urge the projections and the end portions of the side legs of the retainer radially inward to a position where the projections are disengaged from lock edges on the axially extending surfaces of the housing to allow disengagement of the retainer element from the male component of the quick connector.

A quick connector with a one-way flow valve includes a bearing cage mounted in a bore of a female component housing and supporting a tip end of a conduit lockingly held in the housing by a retainer. A projection extends from one end of the bearing cage and spaces a flow ball movably mounted in the housing bore at a first, flow permitting open position wherein flow paths between the male and female components are established around the exterior of the flow ball and between circumferentially spaced ribs formed in the housing and supporting the flow ball. The flow ball is automatically movable in response to a reverse direction acting fluid pressure differential to a second, flow-blocking position in sealing engagement with a valve seat formed in the housing bore to prevent reverse fluid flow through the connector.

An insertion indicator for a metal quick connector assembly includes an annular base adapted to be releasably received within the mouth of a female connector component's axial bore, such that the male end form of the connector assembly's male component, including an external flange thereon, is insertable through the indicator's base into the axial bore. The indicator further includes two legs projecting both axially and radially-inwardly from its base so as to extend deeper within the female component's axial bore than the "locking" abutment surfaces of a retainer, also disposed within the bore, when the indicator is releasably received therein. Each leg is resiliently radially yieldable so as to permit passage of an external flange or upset bead on the male component through the indicator, whereupon the free end of each leg rebounds to provide an axially-disposed surface with which the indicator may thereafter be operatively ejected through engagement with the male component's upset bead upon slight retraction of the male component from within the bore.

A squeeze-to-release quick connector for engaging a flanged male member includes a cylindrical body portion which is open at one end for receiving the male member and forms a conduit receiving adapter at its opposite end. An annular retainer ring is axially spaced from the open end and is attached to the body portion by two circumferentially opposed, generally parallel axially elongated beam members. Each beam member is affixed at one end to the retaining ring and at an opposed end to a mount located on the body portion axially spaced from the open end. Two circumferentially spaced detents extend inwardly from a retaining ring to capture the male abutment surface to effect positive engagement therebetween.

A quick connector includes a housing assembly for receiving one end of a conduit with an enlarged annular flange and a retainer for locking the conduit in the housing assembly. The housing assembly includes first and second housings which are rotatably and non-axially displaceably interconnected. A rigid top hat is fixedly mounted in the bore in the first housing to prevent axial displacement of the first and second housings. An annular recess in the top hat receives the flange on the conduit. The housings can also be incrementally indexable ribs on a stem of one housing fixedly and non-rotatingly engage an inner surface of a flexible conduit.

A Hybrid Quick Connector for releasably interconnecting fluid carrying tubular members has a housing with first and second portions which are joined together to establish a through passage for fluid communication of the tubular members. One housing portion defines a first bearing surface and a retainer for releasably engaging an end form of one of the members. The other housing portion is permanently affixed to the end form of the other member and defines a second bearing surface which is axially spaced from the first bearing surface to straddle a resilient seal. Upon insertion of the first tubing end form, a retainer locks it in assembly with the quick connector and the seal acts to block the only potential leak path. Preferably, the first housing portion is formed of injection molded thermoplastic and the second housing portion is formed of mild steel to ensure a robust and inexpensive connector configuration which is particularly well suited for automotive air conditioning and engine coolant system applications.

A quick connect fluid coupling equipped with a check valve and a service valve includes a housing that has a primary passage and an auxiliary passage arranged in a T-shape construction. The primary passage is provided with a check valve and an outlet end adapted to receive a male connector member in a locking engagement. The outlet end is arranged at 90.degree. with the inlet end of the primary passage. The auxiliary passage is equipped with a service valve adapted for receiving a fluid pressure detecting head at an outlet end and shares the same inlet end with the primary passage.

A quick connector assembly for coupling a flexible hose or tube to a bore formed in a housing thereby to establish fluid communication between the interiors of the hose and bore, respectively, comprises an elongate tubular male insert having one end adapted to receive and retain the tube about its periphery. The other end of the male insert includes a contoured external surface defining an external locking flange, and a pair of axially-spaced external circumferential grooves for receiving a pair of O-rings which ultimately sealingly engage complementary cylindrical sections of the housing bore upon insertion of the connector assembly thereinto. Prior to its insertion into the housing bore, the connector assembly includes a garter spring which is radially collapsed about the male insert's contoured external surface by an encompassing annular spring guide. Upon inserting the connector assembly into the housing bore, the spring guide first seats itself against the housing and the garter spring is thereafter displaced by the locking flange from its radially-collapsed pre-insertion position within the spring guide down into the housing bore and, ultimately, into a locking groove formed internally of the housing bore. The garter spring thereafter further expands to allow the locking flange to pass therethrough and then radially contracts upon full insertion of the male insert into the housing bore to lock the connector assembly therein.

A quick connector adapted for locking engagement with a male member includes a cylindrical body portion open at one end for receiving the male member and a through passage communicating the open end with a conduit receiving adapter at an opposite end. A valve member is located in the passage and is displaceable from a closed position to an open position to establish open communication therethrough in response to engagement of the body portion and male member. Relatively displaceable, at least partially radially coextensive seats are provided to effect axial engagement with the seal in the closed position.
Abstract:
A stuffer pin for mounting seals and a retainer element in a quick connector used with fluid conduits. The stuffer pin includes an integral shaft, an enlarged stop and a handle. Annular seal mounting portions are formed on the shaft for releasibly supporting seal elements. A ridge is formed on the shaft for releasibly engaging and mounting a retainer on the shaft. Resilient arms extend axially from an end of the shaft and have a larger nominal outer diameter than the diameter of the shaft to retain the seal elements on the shaft prior to insertion into a bore in a fluid carrying member. The resilient arms are bent radially inward when contacting a stepped bore in the fluid carrying member to enable release of the seals and retainer elements during withdrawal of the stuffer pin from the bore.
