The invention relates to methods of assembling piles of newspapers and may be employed to the utmost effectiveness in automatic lines for printing newspapers, and their subsequent handling and treatment. In the disclosed method, as a larger pile of papers is being assembled, a portion of this pile is first assembled within a time not shorter than the time for unloading that pile, so that the time for assembling the remaining portion of the larger pile should be in excess of the pile unloading time, whereafter a smaller pile is then assembled, and then the remaining portion of the greater pile is assembled simultaneously with unloading of the assembled smaller pile from the respective bin. The method provides for assembling smaller piles containing any amount of newspapers, even a pile of one newspaper.

The invention relates to conveyors for transporting piles of printed matter, and can be employed to utmost effectiveness for conveying piles containing up to 50 newspapers. The conveyor includes a chain having carriages mounted thereon, each carrying a clamp including two fork-shaped spring-loaded flaps making up a box-like receptacle capable of receiving therein a pile of newspapers. The ends of the prongs of one said fork-shaped flap are bent toward the prongs of the other fork-shaped flap to retain a pile during travel of the conveyor. Both flaps are pivotably mounted on the carriage by means of pivot pins, whereby the flaps may be alternatingly pivoted to open the box-like receptacle for the loading and unloading thereof.

An apparatus for assembling piles of newspapers and the like, comprising a pile-advancing rollerway and a pair of shafts extending at both sides of this rollerway and carrying a pair of oppositely arranged S-shaped levers defining therebetween a pile assembling zone. The shafts are driven for opposite timed rotation, so that the arms of the levers pass through the space intermediate of the rollers of the rollerways, move toward each other and overlap to raise a pile and to hold it in the assembling zone, whereafter the arms spread apart to lower the pile onto the successive pile, so that a batch is formed. A pair of drums is mounted in advance of the assembling zone longitudinally of the rollerway to guide a pile into the zone; mounted in this assembling zone, in front of the S-shaped levers, are vertically extending driven rollers adapted to effect positive levelling of the lateral sides of the pile. The provision of the drums and of the driven rollers prevent displacement and skewing of a pile relative to the longitudinal axis of the rollerway, thus providing high quality batches assembled from the piles.

The device includes a pile advancing rollerway, the rollers of which are mounted so that the ends thereof are free and spaces are left intermediate of these free ends. Levers are mounted radially on shafts and arranged in opposition to one another so as to form opposing pairs of said levers defining a pile assembling zone. These levers have their arms of an overall length approximating the spacing between these shafts and being offset relative to one another, so that on rotation of these shafts the arms of these levers are brought together and overlap to support a pile in the assembling zone. The device further includes means for spreading these levers, with said shafts being stationary, to provide for delivering of collected bundle from the collecting zone in the same plane in which the piles are advanced thereinto. A compressing plate compresses a bundle being collected. The disclosed structure provides for collecting piles of any printed matter into bundles, prevents running of the levers on the same shafts onto one another and enables to effect compressing of a bundle directly in the course of its collecting.
