A method of preparing fine particulate coal for power generation on which the coal is pretreated by the oil agglomeration method (10, 11) to increase the carbonaceous content and produce coal-oil agglomerates. These are fed to a fluidized bed (15) in which the fluid is steam. The bed as concentration is variable and agglomerates leaving the bed are disintegrated in a steam jet (21) which completes separation of the oil from the coal and forms the fine particle coal feed. The oil and steam are separated from the coal feed which continues in the fuel delivery system 29 to the power generation plant. The only steam mix is condensed 37 and the two phases separated (39) and recycled for further use. A control means is provided which is responsive to steam generation demand and activates changes in the generation of coal oil agglomerates (10, 11) and the discharge of coal particles from the fluid bed, disintegrator 15, 21.

A method of deashing coal wherein the coal is wetted with hydrocarbon liquid to form agglomerates and the hydrophilic agglomerates are then separated from a water and ash phase to yield deashed coal agglomerates. The hydrocarbon liquid is then recovered from the coal agglomerates by a vacuum stripping in the absence of oxidizing gases with or without use of super heated steam. Where super heated steam is used the removed hydrocarbon liquid is subsequently separated from the steam by cooling.

The invention relates to a method and apparatus of forming pellets and in particular spherical binderless pellets from lower rank coals. The method includes the steps of feeding a pelletizing means 10, with a lower rank feedstock, 1; rotating the coal in said pelletizing means, 10, to form pellets in the absence of any binder, wherein the pellets are formed by compaction and layering of coal fines. The moisture content of the lower rank coal is at a level so as to at least substantially fill the voids within the coal.

Gold ore, or any other mineral treated to have a lyophilic surface, (e.g. chalcopyrites), is ground into a slurry in crusher (1) powdered coal and oil are added at location (2), and the mix is conveyed to a contact zone (3), where any micro-agglomerates formed are kept below 500 microns in size. Sequentially, the mix is passed to an agglomeration zone (4), where larger agglomerates of coal-oil and gold or the lyophilic mineral are allowed to form, then separated at (5) from the gangue (8), and recycle continuously via return line (6) and homogenister (7) to the contact zone (3), until a desired gold or mineral concentration in the agglomerates is achieved. Subsequently, the `loaded` coal-oil agglomerates are tapped off the return line (6) at (9), either batchwise or continuously, and the metal values are recovered by pyrometallurgical or concentional separation techniques.

Deashing of coal is achieved by oil agglomeration and subsequent separation of a carbon oil phase. The oil is removed by steam stripping after the coal oil agglomerates have been disintegrated. The fine coal product can be used in steam generating plants such as power stations.
