The invented method characterizes itself in that the sliver (FB′), at the output of the first draft system (4) has a band weight less than 2.5 ktex and is provided with a protective winding, and in that this sliver (FB′) in the second draft system (204) is subjected to a draft of more than 30. Likewise, an apparatus to carry out this method is also proposed.

The invention uses microwaves in the spinning industry in order to determine the band mass of an elongated, substantially non-twisted fiber structure. In addition, a method for measuring the sliver mass from the frequency detuning and the damping of resonance signals of a microwave sensor while taking into consideration the moisture of the fiber structure with a computer is suggested. Likewise, a corresponding spinning preparation machine and a laboratory device for measuring the sliver mass are part of the invention. Lastly, a method and a spinning preparation machine for recognizing foreign matter in a moved fiber structure with the aid of microwaves is suggested.

The roll pairs (5, 6, 7) possess upper rolls (5a, 6a, 7a) and under rolls (5b, 6b, 7b). The roll pairs (5, 6, 7) are installed in a housing (15), wherein the roll pairs are protected from ambient atmospheric conditions about the preparatory machine (1) and from components thereof. A temperature controller (20) functions with the housing (15) to bring about internally a desired operational temperature, which is independent of temperature external to the housing (15).

A method and device for the evaluation of signals of a sensor, in particular of a microwave sensor, is proposed for the detection of the thickness, mass, density and/or moisture of at least one fiber sliver moving relative to the sensor on drafting equipment. A high-frequency unit assigned to the sensor produces a number of first digital signals in digital form of the current state of the (at least one) fiber sliver. The method according to the invention is characterized in that a second digital signal, representing the current sliver thickness or sliver mass of the (at least one) fiber sliver and which is then used to control the drafting equipment and/or to judge the fiber sliver quality, is formed according to an algorithm from the first digital signals made available. In addition a suitable device for the evaluation of the signals of a sensor is proposed.
