In the automated performance of multiple measurements on each of a succession of workpieces, the invention contemplates establishing a plurality of safety-reference positions (S.sub.1 to S.sub.7) along the programmed displacement path intended for the probe head (10) and its work-contacting probe pin. Any one of a variety of error signals developed in the course of conducting the measurement program on a given workpiece is operative to temporarily stop further conduct of the program and to instigate a repeated attempt to successfully traverse the part of the program in which the error signal occurred. The repeated attempt involves retracting displacement of the probe head back to the most-recently traversed safety-reference position, and if the repeated attempt produces the same error signal the probe head is returned to the most-recently traversed safety-reference position and is then caused to by-pass the error-signal part of the program by displacement to a succeeding safety-reference position, for completion of the remaining fraction of the measurement program on the given workpiece.

A receiving bore connects both recesses and extends axially from the metal block. A radiation source and an optical focusing device are provided to introduce radiation into the receiving bore. Two exit bores extend from the recesses at an angle, and reflected or fluorescent radiation emitted by the sample and the beam divider pass through the exit bores. Detectors are at the exit bores to measure the radiation.

The method utilizes safety-reference surfaces (S1 to S5) placed in the form of an enclosing parallelepiped about the workpiece 22. The shortest collision-free connecting paths (P1-P2-P3) from one geometric element to the next are computed on these safety-reference surfaces.

Method for determining the total protein content or individual amino acids in flour, cereal flour and/or leguminous products or other substances by means of fluorescence analysis. The proteins and/or the individual amino acids are treated to attain a fluorescent effect or are self-fluorescent. The proteins and/or the individual amino acids are brought into suspension in their unpretreated form. The suspension is then fluorometrically measured by means of vertical transillumination. An apparatus is provided for practicing the method and comprises a primary radiation source for emitting a primary radiation to excite the fluorescent material, optical means for directing the primary radiation in a vertical direction onto the proteins and/or amino acids in suspension, at least one vessel for holding the suspension, through which the primary radiation can pass in a vertical direction, and receiving means and evaluating means for measuring the fluorescent radiation.
