    摘要: A vacuum guide roll apparatus is disclosed for guiding a web between an upstream dryer and a downstream dryer of a dryer section. The apparatus includes a perforate roll shell having a first and a second end. The shell defines an elongate chamber which extends between the first and the second ends. A first and second shaft are rigidly secured to and disposed coaxially relative to the shell. The shafts are disposed adjacent to the first and second ends respectively of the shell. The shafts define respectively a first and second journal. A first and second bearing cooperate with the first and second journals respectively for rotatably supporting the roll shell. A housing is disposed coaxially relative to the shell and adjacent to one of the shafts. The housing defines a passageway which is connected to a source of partial vacuum. A first annular seal is disposed between the housing and the one shaft for sealing the housing relative to the one shaft. A second annular seal is disposed between the housing and the shell for sealing the housing relative to the shell so that when the shell rotates relative to the housing, the passageway is sealingly connected to the elongate chamber such that a partial vacuum is generated within the chamber for urging the web towards the perforate shell.

    摘要: A ventilating roll for introducing a supply of relatively dry air into the pocket spaces between dryer rolls and the co-running fabrics and paper web in a papermaking machine, and removing the relatively moist air which is liberated from the traveling paper web as it comes into contact with the heated dryer rolls. The ventilating roll has a plurality of separate compartments, some of which conduct super-atmospheric pressure air into the pocket spaces, and some of which conduct sub-atmospheric air out of the pocket spaces. The compartments conducting air into the roll alternate with the compartments for conducting air out of the roll. The temperature of the internal structure of the roll is thereby balanced circumferentially about the center shaft of the roll and thermal bowing of the roll is kept to a minimum.

    摘要: A controlled deflection roll has a roll shell which is hydrostatically radially supported by internally disposed hydrostatic shoes. In order to axially position the roll shell, a mechanical locating link is provided which is disposed externally of the roll shell. The link is coupled at one end to an element attached to the roll shell, and is coupled at an opposite end to a fixed support, such as a floor stand. The end of the roll at which the locating link is disposed is thus axially fixed, while the opposite end of the roll remains free to float. The locating link can be connected to an oscillator to oscillate the roll shell axially during operation so as to distribute any non-uniformities in the roll shell and thus to mitigate their effect on the sheet.

Individual hydraulic pistons are disposed along the stationary cross head, which, under the force of hydraulic pressure, support the inner wall of a roll or an extended nip shoe. The displacement of the support cylinders is controlled through one or more adjustable ports formed in the sidewall of the hydraulic cylinder or cylinders which support the roll or extended nip shoe. With a piston which extends from one end of the stationary cross head to the other, some tilting from one side to the other of the cross head can be achieved by the adjustment of the pressure ports, thus compensating for misalignment in the vertical direction between an extended nip or crown-controlled roll.

The nip line of the most intense nip pressure along the length of contact of the shoe over the backing roll is selectively located, as desired, by pivotally supporting the shoe about two, parallel, longitudinally extending axes which, in turn, are supported on separately controlled hydraulic pistons. The pressure profile of the nip pressure over the face of the shoe can also be altered by controlling the hydraulic pressure in the support pistons.

    摘要: A self-loading controlled deflection roll has its tubular shell rotatably supported on front and back bearings which, in turn, are mounted on a bearing ring which is outwardly-movable arcuately on a pair of opposed pistons and shoes at either end of the roll. The bearing ring at each end of the roll is pivotally-linked with the roll shaft to prevent skewing movement between their longitudinal axes. The opposed pistons and shoes operating within the bearing rings at the edges of the roll shell position and load the roll into and out of nipping engagement with a mating roll independently of the operation of a separate nip shoe which controls the deflection of the roll. The pistons within the bearing rings can be used to either provide additional nip loading independent of the nip shoe, or provide a counterload in the opposite direction. Both can be used for edge correction.

The sleeve also defines an external face which closely conforms to the inner surface of the bearing ring such that angular movement of the sleeve within the bearing ring is permitted while axial movement of the sleeve relative to the bearing ring is inhibited.

    摘要: A controlld deflection roll has a unique liquid barrier and heat shield which includes a chamber filled with cooling fluid. In a preferred embodiment, the barrier comprises two chambers and a space in fluid communication with both chambers for circulating cooling fluid between the chambers and into and out of the roll. The barrier is interposed between the interior cavity of the roll containing the extremely hot hydraulic fluid which actuates the apparatus for controlling the deflection of the roll, and the bearings which rotatably align the roll shell relative to the space. The barrier, thus, functions to thermally insulate the bearings from heat, whether by radiation or by direct contact with the hydraulic fluid.
